Abstract

The curriculum for chemical engineering is continuously evolving and varies from university to university. To understand current trends in chemical engineering pedagogy, surveys and public policies are important sources of data, but the ground truth of what is being taught in our departments sometimes differs from public-facing policy and self-reporting. In this work, we collected public data from class schedules, department undergraduate guides, and other online sources for the 2022-23 school year from 29 top ranked chemical engineering departments in the United States, according to US News & World Report and 6 additional state schools. Using the assembled database, this paper examines the variety in department 4-year undergraduate curriculums, BS/MS programs, and the teaching load of faculty members in the department, both tenure and non-tenure track. Our findings present a snapshot of chemical engineering curricula and may be used to aid departments compare how their curriculum lines-up with current and emerging trends.
