Abstract

When working in interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary group projects, students run into different types of conflicts. These conflicts often hinder their work progress and negatively affect their learning experience, which impedes achieving course learning outcomes. Equipping students with the knowledge to strategically work together in a collaborative team, understanding how conflicts arise and the proper techniques to resolve them, is key in supporting diversity, inclusion, and student learning. The instructor developed a teaching module covering research-based information and techniques to help students overcome conflicts and perform well in groups. The module covers the following topics: team forming stages, characteristics of highly performing teams, types of conflicts, and conflict resolution strategies. The module includes activities, assignments, and a case study. The paper details a plan on how to integrate this module in course work. The audience will explore ideas on how to integrate this content in their course, how to ensure student engagement during class, and discuss different types of activities to practice the acquired knowledge in project work.
