With over ten years of experience in educational programming, communities of practice and stakeholder convenings, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Roc´ıo has served as principal investigator or co-investigator in numerous federally funded projects. Roc´ıo holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University, and B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Universidad de las Americas, Puebla (UDLAP) in Mexico. Faculty at all institutions are obviously recruited from thePhD granting institutions and consequently have typically spent four or more years conductingadvanced research usually on grant money, have authored papers and reports based on theirwork, and therefore enter the academic world already aware of, and presumably now able toexecute on their own, similar projects.However, other factors come in to play. Some new hires in non-PhD granting programs arespecifically drawn to such schools because they are more interested in teaching what they knowto undergraduates than they are in directing graduate students in research work.
