key information the studentswere to convey and course objectives. Additionally, considerable thought went into what wouldcause the students to not meet expectations and lose points for each of the constructs in therubrics. Well-designed rubrics can help faculty set clear expectations for students, providefeedback and assess technical writing skills[10]. Additionally, it is important for rubrics to bereliable across instructors in team taught courses or when instructors change. This study aimed to evaluate the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of the technical report rubricdeveloped in collaboration with the Writing Center across instructors teaching laboratory courseswithin the chemical engineering curriculum. load introduced by the presentation of an idea, and germane cognitive load is the effortrequired to convert knowledge from short to long term memory [17].Cognitive load is related to laboratory activities. At minimum, the presentation of laboratorymanuals can affect extraneous cognitive load. For instance, laboratory manuals that linkdiagrams to text poorly can introduce extraneous cognitive load [18]. Further, medical literatureshows some evidence that pursuing many learning goals can affect cognitive load [19].4 Teamwork, Interdependence, Stress and SpecializationTeam or group-based work benefits student learning [8], and teamwork skills are consideredessential to employment [20], [21], so teaching and learning teamwork is important

This is the foundation on which we introduce DS concepts, facilitated by open-sourcesoftware such as Python and Jupyter to enhance the accessibility and scalability of this knowledge.Instead of using canonical problems and datasets, we teach these tools using real experimentaldata collected by undergraduates in an upper-division materials characterization laboratory course(MSE 104L) at our institution, which is a large, public, research-intensive university in the UnitedStates. In MSE 104L, students perform a series of experiments (see Table 1), analyze the datathey collect, and write a lab report interpreting their data for each experiment. Informal pollsamong senior undergraduate mechanical engineers at Clemson University, in the SoutheasternUnited States, showed less than 10% of students had heard of PLM by the last semester of theirprogram. Though not intended to be conclusive, this observation can demonstrate the lack offocus on PLM within a traditional program. 3. This model still permits roomfor traditional laboratory and project components.IntroductionIn standard teaching, course topics are covered on a set schedule and exams occur at set schedules. If students have not learned the material for an earlier portion of the class, the course moves alonganyway and focuses on new more difficult material that builds on the previous material thatstudent still does not understand. This promotes a fixed mindset promoting the idea that if youdidn’t get a concept, you never will. At the end of the course, students may only have a partialunderstanding of the material and may be
