Abstract In order to inform a discussion of silenced communities within systemic processes, we examine the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program (ADRP) as a step towards amplifying re- flexive and critical activities already occurring within ASEE. In light of recent concern over the ADRP as a means of disrupting minority marginalization in Engineering Education1 , we reflect on the origins of the program as well as how to proactively shift the program’s cultural context to one of greater criticality about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in engineering, broadly. activities that can be used throughout various engineering andcomputer science courses from first year to upper division [5].As part of this project, the University of Denver (DU) has developed and implemented severalactivities, including a group-based hairdryer design task for second year thermodynamicsstudents. The pilot of the activity took place in spring of 2019 and this initial experience waspresented at ASEE in 2020 [6]. Since then, the activity has been run four times and iterated tohelp strengthen the goals of the activity and assess its effectiveness. Changes since the initialpilot have included options for remote courses, added reflection time, and a focus on overalldesign process instead of detailed mathematical questions. The current

ASEE 2023Some of the key barriers to offering CS to elementary school students that have been foundinclude administrators are not supportive, teachers have not yet received training to teach CS, andresources for adoption remain low [4–7]. A key barrier that has been mentioned in past studies isthat teachers have no time to add an additional subject area to their day, particularly since they areimmersed in teaching to their state standards which more heavily emphasize language arts andmathematics [4].Integrating CS and computational thinking (CT) into subjects such as math and language arts hasbeen viewed as a way to mitigate the barrier related to time [8] and to create innovative learningenvironments [9].
