Moving forward, the PowerPoint slides with a voice overlecture, MATLAB self-paced livescripts, and MATLAB Grader homework problems, which makeup the trifecta, will continue to be improved and assessed for their impact on student learning asthe team continues to strive to make the course material effective and available to all.AcknowledgementsI would like to express my gratitude to my MathWorks® colleague, Dr. Angelica Gopal whocreated all the livescripts from the PowerPoints. I would also like to thank PJ Boardman whorecognized my initial work at the 2022 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition and introducedme to the MathWorks® team.References[1] de Guzman, R., & Vaccaro, J. Full Paper: Impacts of a Wellness-Focused First-Year Course on Student Retention and Academic SuccessIntroductionIn the Western Michigan University (WMU) College of Engineering and Applied Sciences(CEAS), ENGR 2100, First-year CEAS Experience, is encouraged for all new beginner students.ENGR 2100 has been approved for inclusion in the WMU Essential Studies (i.e., generaleducation) program in the category of Personal Wellness. The course has gone through severaliterations – it was initially implemented as a two-credit first-year experience course as part of anNSF-funded initiative focused on students placing into Algebra II. In Fall 2022, it wassignificantly restructured to focus on personal wellness but enrollment was

these efforts, first-generation students are stillless likely than their peers to persist or graduate from college [4] and there is the need forcolleges to understand the skills that first-generation students bring to college, and the skills thatthey perceive to be important to help them succeed in their coursework. The low number of women studying engineering at colleges continues to also be a problem, despite the efforts to increase the representation of women. According to the 2022 AmericanSociety of Engineering Education (ASEE) report, women made up only 25.5% of the totalundergraduate engineering enrollment compared to men at 74.5% [5]. The retention rates forwomen undergraduate engineering students are also highly concerning, as 22.7% of

The guest lectures typically combine an overview of the disciplineincluding typical problems solved, some stories of current work going on at the university, adescription of the major requirements and student activities, and sometimes a bit about thepresenter’s own career path. While the students explore about half of CWRU’s availableengineering programs in more depth during the laboratory activities, their initial exposure to theother half is strictly through these presentations. The course was piloted in 2019 with around a dozen students and one instructor and steadilyexpanded. The data was collected for theacademic year 2022 at the end of spring semester through an online Qualtrics survey. Of the 110students who received the survey, only 90 completed it (N=90). Most students were male (78%),white (68%), and non-Hispanic (92%). Among non-white students, 12% identified as Asians,11% as Blacks/African Americans, 2% as multiracial and 7% as others. intrinsic and extrinsic motivation [14].When students engage in project-based learning, their need for autonomy can be met as theyactively engage in tasks that promote learning, develop their cognitive capabilities, fostercollaboration amongst peers, and when they receive the right scaffolding from faculty [15].This paper directly builds on a study carried out with the students of Ashesi University whoparticipated in a first-year design-oriented course in 2022 [7]. That study commenced anexploration of the three constructs brought into view – self-efficacy, self-determination andagency, and it revealed the need for relying more on existing validated surveys. Here, a revisedset of scales is used to explore the relevance of these constructs through a
