This is also apparent in current K-12 curricula which lack hands-on engineeringconcepts due to time and resource constraints imposed on science educators by administratorsand state standards. The cumulative effect of these approaches to education over a student’s pre-college academic lifetime results in: 1) a shortage in career-ready high school graduates; and 2) alimited number of college bound students pursuing STEM education and careers. persistence of unfilled posts in programming and ITfields originates more from business hiring practices and a perceived “skill deficit”among degree holders and potential applicants (2, 5). Regardless of the veracity of theclaims, researchers have been working during the last 15 years to identify and overcomepotential barriers to careers and study in computer science. Following recommendationsfrom national reports (1, 15), mediation efforts have adroitly focused on K-12 education,measuring potential bottlenecks in the pipeline for programmers (4, 22).
