Engineering Technology,and Telecommunications Systems Management programs at Murray State University reflect ontheir study abroad program successes and practices. The study abroad programs were 16-week (3credit hour) courses with instructional period throughout the semester, with travel occurring duringspring or summer breaks. All five study abroad programs concluded with students traveling to theinternational partner’s location and providing a unit of work or deliverable. As a part oftheir first class, students follow a rigorous industry-standard design process that requires criticalthinking at every step in the project: develop design criteria, evaluate multiple concepts to thecriteria, build, predict trends from their test data, reflect upon performance and incorporateimprovements, repeat the cycle, compete, document, and finally reflect on their project, teamwork,and process. Along the way the students develop their teamwork and leadership skills, orallydefend their assumptions and decisions, and communicate their process in both written and oralforms. Somedisadvantages included the additional time that is needed to perform well organized peer reviewprocess, and taking time of actual laboratory work. Also, some students had a tendency to just givea type of yes no answers in the review, and not provide meaningful feedback that could be usedby the authors to improve their reports. Therefore, the instructor has to spend time encouraging toimprove the comments to their peers. Engineering Technology, New York City College of Technology has implemented aninstructional strategy in one of the main gatekeeper courses. Statics has been identified as a coursewhere undergraduates either decide to retain in their Civil Engineering Technology major ortransfer out to another one. To provide more support for undergraduates taking this course, thePeer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) strategy was adopted. This study compared the final gradedistribution of the Statics course in three categories: no PLTL, non-mandatory PLTL, andmandatory PLTL.
