].One of the conclusions from Deardorff (2006)’s study is that intercultural scholars and highereducation administrators did not define intercultural competence in relation to specificcomponents. Instead, both groups preferred definitions that were broader in nature [15].However, there was an 80% agreement on these skills. Using the items on which 80% or more ofboth the intercultural scholars and administrators agreed, Deardorff (2006) organized these itemsinto two visual ways of defining intercultural competence that could be used as a framework byadministrators and others in their work in developing and accessing intercultural competence[15]. 80 individuals who taught only chemical engineering students and another27 taught both chemical engineering students and related area(s) (biomedical, n=12; biological,n=6; environmental, n=7; materials, n=5; petroleum, n=3; plastics, n=2; paper=1). These twogroups were combined to represent chemical engineering respondents, n=107. These individualsrepresented 76 different institutions, including 72 that award ABET EAC-accredited bachelor’sdegrees in chemical engineering and two international. The ranks of these chemical engineeringinstructors were 36% full professors, 33% associate professors, 21% assistant professors, and 8%full-time instructors. Additional positions held by these respondents included 20% directors ofprogram or center, 16

faculty members in the Department wanted to follow suit, and began their search for theright type of practitioners, to enrich the academic process by bringing the practice into the classroom. After Foundation Engineering was over, and the final course grade was out, a“questionnaire” was sent to those who enrolled in the class seeking their opinions, evaluations,and any comment(s) they may wish to offer. Twenty six out of a total of 30 students returned the“questionnaire” on time! The opinions expressed and comments made were, by and large,positive to say the least.
