were several goals to achieve using this form of instruction. The first goal was todetermine if the same project could be adapted in each course, such that students complete thesame design with two different materials. The second goal was to expose students to differentstructural details within the same set of overall building plans (i.e., the details and requirementsfor concrete and steel vary) while bolstering their ability to read and interpret drawings used inthe industry. The final goal was to assess if students connected topics from previous classes (e.g.,structural analysis and statics) to the current design classes and if the project helped them retainknowledge. The project has been implemented in reinforced concrete and steel

Of primary importance throughout each program was providing the studentsone-on-one interactions with researchers in each country and allowing them to continue thoserelationships as they completed research projects back in the U.S.This paper reviews the process of establishing and developing an international research programand the key elements needed to make it successful. It then discusses the actual researchexperiences in our program, the work products developed, and the benefits realized by thestudents. The key topics discussed include program planning, logistics, program execution, assessment, and lessons

However, further research into benefit use noted that

Composer Herron plans to incorporate the musical bridges designed by the students intoher composition and performance.Goals, Objectives, and RequirementsThe main goal of the project was to have students apply the theory discussed in class to design, analyze, and build sound-generating or musical bridges in small groups. Additional goals for theproject were: to engage a broader demographic of students (specifically women andunderrepresented minorities), help students build connections between engineering and music, and encourage students to be creative. In addition to designing and building bridges, students analyzed the forces, stresses, anddeflections expected in their bridges for a given load and calculated

faculty recognizes the benefit in combining service learning activities intobeginning engineering courses, as well as capstone courses. This is done by planning a feasibleproject with a community-based organization, having both beginning and senior level engineeringstudents engage in it over a period of one to two semesters. The paper discusses an effective approach on how to integrate learning in a reverse hierarchicalmanner. It also presents measures to evaluate both successes and failures of this approach. Theprojected longevity of the approach, tackling various projects, is integrated into the study. The twoCECM faculty members also discuss the viability of transferring this approach to other universitiesand engineering colleges.INTRODUCTIONA

. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2017A Tiered Mentoring Model for Deepening Student Learning AcrossUndergraduate and Graduate Design CoursesAbstractThe authors are experimenting with implementation of a tiered mentoring model acrossundergraduate and graduate-level concurrently-taught design courses. The undergraduate course is a senior-level design course in which students learn the fundamentalsof designing steel structures. It is structured around an authentic semester-long team-based designproject in which student design teams develop the structural plans for a real building based on anarchitectural concept. A series of intermediate project deliverables are sequenced throughout thesemester to ensure that the undergraduate

c American Society for Engineering Education, 2017 The Journey to Initial Accreditation of a Civil Engineering ProgramAbstractStarting a new engineering program that fulfills ABET EAC 2000 requirements is a majorundertaking. With a new program, there is great responsibility to develop the curricula andassessment tools to meet university, community, and stakeholder requirements while meetingABET EAC outcomes. In this paper, the authors will discuss the process of implementing anew civil engineering program at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas (in theAmarillo, Texas metropolitan area). This discussion includes the planning, launch, andimplementation of curricula that lead to a successful initial ABET EAC accreditation, as

event was the recognition that itwas time to revisit and possibly revise the teaching model. Joyce & Weil1 suggests that “Ateaching model is a pattern or plan, which can be used to shape a curriculum or course, to selectinstruction materials, and to guide a teacher’s actions.” Within C&ME, the teaching modelserves as a “north star” by which a myriad of teaching-related decisions are made. Further, theC&ME teaching model acts as the structure upon which the Department’s annual six-week newinstructor summer workshop (ISW) is founded. The USMA utilizes a large number of officers that serve as rotating faculty members, typicallyfor three years. As a number of faculty members rotate out each year, a new group of instructorsarrive and are

The analysis included acombination of data acquisition through laser scanning and a hypothetical model generated viaNURBS and subdivision surface modeling based on the resultant data, the end result being ahypothetical template that could be used for varying sizes of this type of building plan. Finally, for the Colosseum itself, Gutierrez et al. [6] experimented with a digital Colosseummodel for the simulation of a virtual crowd, which was used to test the efficiency of thevomitoria. The structure of the Colosseum was analyzed with the interior passageways in mind –a necessity for the simulation of people moving not

other retention programs began in 2012have been extremely valuable as the School has nearly doubled its engineering enrollments(Table 3).Since honors and full scholarship interviews are still being conducted, each program mustconduct their own interviews to determine how to distribute the need based scholarships.Once the actual fall scholar’s weekend approached, most programs had a plan for their interviews. The School of Engineering began using the first hour of the two hours to view actual engineering classes on Friday morning to interview potential STEM scholars. This allowed those students being considered for the honors program or full scholarships to still be interviewed Friday afternoon. Table 3. Undergraduate

promoteinnovation through real world projects that connect student to faculty research.1 The goal of theVIP program at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is to add project-based curriculumthroughout the four year undergraduate degree. Increasingly, engineering educators areidentifying this project-based curriculum sequence as the cornerstone to capstone courses – first-year intro to engineering and capstone design curriculum. Vertically Integrated Projects allowstudents to continue developing skills from the first-year engineering design projects:entrepreneurship, innovation, design, teamwork, and leadership. In addition to these professionalskills, these Vertically Integrated Project teams will develop hardware, software, data analysis, planning and

The course willbe offered in two 50-minute periods per week, instead of 100-minutes once per week. Theseshorter periods may be more likely to retain student attention. Faculty who come in to give FEreview sessions will be encouraged to work a few example problems, and then give a handoutwith additional worked examples. The multiple-choice practice quizzes for the FE topics willalso be retooled to provide worked solutions after a student completes the quiz. In 2015 and 2016the students were allowed to repeat the quizzes as often as they chose, which
