in the cohort met with an assigned engineering facultymentor individually twice a semester and interacted with all faculty mentors for the program atseminars held twice a semester. Two cohorts operated concurrently with one starting in Fall of 2019 and a second startingin Fall of 2020. At the time of this study, the first cohort had completed eight semesters of theirengineering program and cohort two had completed six semesters. For comparison across thetwo cohorts, only data from the first six semesters of each cohort was used for this study. As thiscohort is an outward-facing program, major enrollment and demographic information includinggender and race/ethnicity are removed to protect the identities of our participants

about innate brilliance that exist in USculture have been shown to result in non-white and non-male individuals being presumed to beless competent than their majority counterparts despite their achievements (Gutiérrez y Muhs etal., 2012). Mentzer et al. study launched a quantitative investigation examining the extent to which basicpsychological needs were met prior to the pandemic in a traditional face-to-face only version of the coursecompared to a version of the course using our HyFlex model.This quasi-experimental study had two distinct components, each with their own research question and sample.First, we hypothesized that the HyFlex environment met students' basic psychological needs as well as orperhaps better than the traditional face-to-face only environment. learning goals for pre-college engineering are stillbeing contested. One argument, which is promoted in science standards, is that engineeringdesign provides an authentic context to apply science concepts [4] [5] [6]. However, others arguethat this represents too narrow a view of engineering and promotes misconceptions [7] [8]. Inresponse to these concerns, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) andAdvancing Excellence in P12 Engineering Education introduced a Framework for P-12Engineering Learning [9]. This framework outlines learning goals for engineering literacy thatmove beyond a narrow focus on practices, including engineering habits of mind and knowledge.In addition, the authors call for further research to scaffold learning
