thelibrary tradition of honing one’s database searching skills on the standard tools of the computerworld: hardware, software, and the network. The Firefox Open Source browser allows customization through what it calls add-ons (alsocalled extensions). Mozilla was originally formed from the ruins of Netscape, a pioneeringbrowser that was seen off by Internet Explorer. Before it died, Netscape relicensed its browseras Open Source. It became the Mozilla Project and Firefox was the browser. The bare-bonesnature of the original Firefox led to a virtuous circle where the released browser became popular, the developers took advantage of the easily installable add-ons to create more add-ons andfeatures, and the popularity of the add-ons lead to more people

The efficacy of this pedagogicalchange to contextualize examples followed by immediate application was assessed by measuringthe frequency and type of citations used by all 3 sections of the class. Citation analysis found astatistically insignificant 7% increase in total number of citations used by the test sectionstudents. Although the utilization of engineering standards did not increase, the use of greyliterature in the test section increase 83% compared with the two control sections taught by thesame engineering faculty. Furthermore the test section decreased their use of multimediainformation. Two subsequent sections of the course taught by other

, analyzing, and interpreting bibliometric dataremains a challenge. Applying information visualization techniques to bibliometric maps creates graphicalrepresentations that enhance users’ understanding of network structure. With the increasing availability ofsophisticated tools that allow for easy data analysis, mapping bibliometric data has become more accessible tolibrarians. This paper examines the value of visualizing bibliometric data. Specifically, it relates the experience of usingthe Sci2 Tool to analyze the data collected for a citation analysis project and to visualize the co-authors, co-citation, and bibliographic coupling networks revealed by that analysis. Furthermore, it discusses thechallenges encountered while using the Sci2 Tool for

Conversely, the usage of Springer e-books increased dramatically at UBC and U of T after the Page 23.744.10implementation of Summon, since they are full-text searchable in Summon. Collecting andanalyzing the statistics for this project was illuminating, and after working with the data andanalyzing the usage patterns, we have recommendations for vendors. These recommendationsinclude allowing discovery layers to not only index their e-books, but to search the full text inorder to increase discoverability and increase the relevance ranking of

Inparticular, Atman and colleagues have added substantially to this knowledge base throughresearch comparing students to experienced engineers. Atman and colleagues synthesized theirresearch and described four areas where differences are most notable: (1) problem scoping andinformation gathering, (2) project realization, (3) considering alternative solutions, and (4) totaltime and transitions.9In regard to problem scoping and information gathering, Atman and colleagues found severaldifferences between first-year students, more advanced engineering students, and experiencedengineers.9 For example, first-year students are not as effective as seniors in

While there were several other items with a negative association, noneof the others were significant at the p < 0.05 level. In comparison to the item analysis of theCELT instrument, items 3 and 15 both had very low item discrimination values as determined bythe point biserial correlation, and thus were determined to be poor items11. Some libraries have developed policies and guidelines thatspell out what level of librarian involvement constitutes a basis for co-authorship. It is importantthat librarians understand the substantial time commitment involved in participation in systematicreview projects, and that there is consideration in their institution of whether such support is to beroutinely offered, or whether it becomes part of a fee-for-service scheme. If they are willing toengage in this work, librarians should advocate for their inclusion in systematic review researchteams. Several agencies [21], [22] recommend the

Theconjuncture of the two conditions precipitated the transformation of the research assessment intoa complex process aiming to evaluate research quality and measure its impact.3 As a result, research assessment process plays an important role in funding decisions and enablesorganizations to manage their research performance and to maximize their research output andimpact.4The growth in research assessment scope triggered an expansion of the stakeholders involved inthe process to include university administrators

In this study nearly 11% of the articleswere deposited in institutional or disciplinary repositories. Much higher were the percentages offaculty in all three disciplines, in all five institutions who have at least one article with someform of open access. IR deposition is still in its infancy in these fields and repeated studies suchas this one will determine if the percentage of available publications is on the rise. Free access isincreasingly becoming the mantra and predictably faculty will more and more prefer to pull theircited publications from the
