accomplish this goal is to expose students to global contemporary issues, toolsand methodologies, by providing structured opportunities to interact with professionals in thefield as well as their day-to-day projects. Thus, global partnerships and subsequent access tointernational research opportunities were actively pursued and provided to students enrolling inthe program.Growth & Global PartnershipsDuring the first year of the Engineering Science Program, the primary focus was developing, establishing and implementing the curriculum. Enrollment primarily consisted of currentstudents completing Physics degrees with the hopes of continuing to graduate studies in anengineering field. Thus, for the summer 2015 pilot Faculty-led STEM Research

thesis project. In addition, senior-level engineering students were required to complete ateam-oriented, design focused capstone project as well as an individual based, research focusedproject in order to graduate. Both of which were evaluated by the departmental staff. The scope, rigor, and quality of such projects appeared to be similar to those found in the U.S., which wasencouraging. However, the lack of staff with academic credentials made this problematic as thenumber of available project supervisors was so limited to adequately mentor approximately 20master level and 30 undergraduate students within the department. As a consequence, the authorspent considerable time during the year assisting students in formulating appropriate

Thus students’ academic mobility may be considered not only as a social phenomenon(traveling and making joint projects), but also as an integrative personal trait (the ability and Page 26.425.4readiness to adapt easily to the diversity and the dynamism of the educational process). It isevident that all levels of the professional education system should meet both social andpersonal requirements. The academically mobile person is active, constantly developing, andpossesses flexible, creative thinking. At the same time, self-improvement is

Engineering Program proposed by COPEC-OPASS educational programs designteam can be described as: The field of study, which main goal is to solve social issues promotingthe civilization evolution. It is not just the application of technology to solve social issues. It is apractical study which tries to reform the society by means of the development of new policies, planning, or by presenting concepts. Certainly it is not an easy task to accomplish such programprincipally because it is a bold ambitious project and because it is an engineering program lesstechnical and more practical. Anyway the whole concept is very new and feasible once it is Page

The proposal was to takeadvantage of the long history of collaboration between these universities and to explore thepossibility to create an innovative cross-border engineering dual degree program challenging thecurrent policies in student mobility, credit transfer, cost of education, cultural adaptation, andlanguage barriers at both institutions. The difficulties posed by this initiative were abundant butthe desire to develop this partnership fueled the initiative and immediately an agenda was set toevaluate the feasibility of this project. Once both parties agreed that a project of this magnitudewould benefit their respective institutions, they moved forward to define the operationalguidelines and administrative requirements to

There may have been as many as 800 attendees andthe symposium was quite interesting because of the diverse nature of the grandchallenges. The breadth of topics placed the symposium at the opposite end of thespectrum of typical single topic engineering symposia or conferences. But what was theprocess that had led up to this symposium? In 2006 the National Academy of Engineering started a project titled Grand Challengesfor Engineering. The stated purpose of this National Academy of Engineering project1is In a fourteen-month project, the NAE will convene a select, international committee to evaluate ideas on the greatest challenges and

Anecdotallywe also observe that the minimal exposure to the formal study of leadership that we are able togive the students in this course leads many of them to take more extensive course on leadershipin their later years of schooling. In addition to the lectures, we assigned team projects as a method by which to actively developleadership and collaborative skills. In addition to developing the characteristics enumeratedabove, group work helps cultivate leadership skills by making it expedient to identify and utilizethe strengths of the team members—a key attribute of a leader. The first team project given the students in the classroom is to research the places (including thetowns, cultural sites, prices, currency, the industries to be visited and the

Engineering, Villanova University, Villanova, PA, USA * Corresponding author: zuyi.huang@villanova.eduAbstract: As an engineering technical software, MATLAB has become an immensely populartool in both academia and industry. It is widely used as a software supplement to many coursesin the College of Engineering at Villanova University. On the other hand, instructors of differentcourses have to spend time introducing MATLAB repeatedly. And instructors are usually left to avery fragmental teaching of MATLAB tools needed for a specific project in a course. Moreover, being focused on the fundamentals of the course, the instructors usually do not have much time toexplain the details of MATLAB. This leaves students frustrated and unaware where to seek

relative mixture of lecture/lab is approximately the same in both programs and the distinction between contact and credit is not a factor for this high level comparison. 2) A masters program in a typical American system is approximately 30 hours with a significant portion of the program covered by a thesis if required. The Russian system also requires a thesis with almost twice the number of course hours (66 vs. 30). 3) In both the older specialist degree and the new bachelor degree, the Russian system requires a project in industry (the equivalent of a short COOP in the American system), plus the equivalent of a significant senior capstone project. Through a thorough consideration of these themes, andconsultation with individuals and groups in education and industry, a list ofcompetencies, defining the global engineer, was formulated: ≠ Strong technical competency ≠ Use of creativity in problem solving ≠ An ability to see engineering projects in the context of multiple disciplines ≠ A recognition of the business implications of engineering work ≠ A recognition of the social implications of engineering work ≠ An ability to work outside of one’s trained discipline ≠ Adaptability, in type, scope
