The preferences of college-bound high school students are especially interesting in this regard. Eighty-six percent said they planned to participate in international courses or programs, and almost 50 percent expressed an interest in study abroad. That is a substantially higher rate than the 3 percent who currently go abroad and, if these preferences materialize, even somewhat, presages a substantial increase in demand. 2. The availability of other forms of campus-based international preparation was also im- portant. Nearly 8 out of 10 national survey respondents remarked that the

We maintainthat although this genre of work (process documentation) is not often found in the academicliterature, it will be of great benefit to those interested in developing similar tools or to those whoare interested in the generalizability of our work to their particular student population. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, we argue that the ultimate goal of our study, that ofdeveloping a direct assessment of students’ skills in reconciling and navigating cross-culturalspaces, will not only enable improved assessment of students’ abilities, but may lead to improvedstrategies for educating students about this critical skill for the 21st century. It should be noted that KathmanduUniversity has lockstep programs in each engineering discipline; therefore, students of the sameyear and major will have identical schedules and class meetings. As a result the students are veryfamiliar with their classmates by the end of their first semester on campus and will continue tobuild these relationships during their four years at the university. This is in contrast to most USengineering programs like the home University of the author. The Strength of Materials classconsisted of 60 students. Furthermore, the university purchased scientific equipment directly fromthe United States to stock its laboratories. The university also subscribed to more than 100Western scientific and engineering journals in an effort to keep faculty and students up-to-datewith the latest knowledge in their academic fields15.Peiyang University had two programs of study: a college-preparatory program and anundergraduate

Educating Engineering Students to Succeed in a Global WorkplaceAbstractCurrent and future graduates from engineering and technology programs will need certain skillsin order to work effectively in a global environment. Most engineers, at some point in theircareers, will work with colleagues in foreign countries, either as co-workers, customers, orsuppliers. Study-abroad programs are a powerful tool for training students in cross-culturalcommunication. While many study-abroad programs exist, few engineering students participate, largely because these programs are disruptive to a student’s plan of study. This paper reviews thedevelopment of a study-abroad program specifically for engineering and technology students. The

Although I typically teach undergraduatedynamics, my assignments at HM included a graduate level multi-body systems (MBS) courseand two undergraduate courses with considerable content in vibrations. I would have to say thatmy primary workload issues revolved around trying to re-learn the MBS and vibrations material, and trying to develop good example problems for each class. Although I have numerousproblems and real-world examples for sophomore level dynamics, the same cannot be said forMBS and vibrations. It was also challenging to plan a 90 minute lecture, when I am used to 50 minute classes. One ofthe courses only met once a week, and the other two had a 90 minute lecture and a 90 minutecomputer

attributes of global competence. We believe the virtual teaming approach has the following potential advantages:≠ The proposed format—virtual international design teams—scales relatively well. Students already take design courses. Faculty already teach such courses. Students would not be required to travel, although some may wish to travel at the beginning or end of the project. We are interested to learn if this format might be an efficient way to teach global skills.≠ The process is similar to the process being adopted by industry. As tools for collaboration become more sophisticated, companies are conducting design and manufacturing process planning via Internet-based web tools. The authors recently experienced this first hand

After I need to finish the log, I will use the options on the log to plan what I will do in class or after class. For journaling reasons, I tried something I hadn't done before. Because of the participation log, I began to take notes in class and communicate with my classmates about the question that I have. I become more engaged especially out-of-class because I should pay more efforts and time to the course to earn the points for participation log. faculty redefine our commitment tolanguage teaching as the teaching of multiple literacies, not just language learning. Thiscollaboration required us to move away from traditional course planning and normativeassessments and to increase learning by presenting linguistic and cultural content in anintellectually challenging manner, commensurate with our institutional disciplinary andinterdisciplinary offerings, and capitalizing on our students’ motivation and drive forapplied (“real”) studies. The pilot collaboration helped inform students that language is aculture-based performance, situated in various public, private, and cross-disciplinarycontexts. Recent language research reflects an understanding of multiple literacies associally bounded and
