memorizationstructure. Students have been passive learners, fully expecting the instructor to provide allinformation. A common complaint from students points out this issue – ‘why is the instructorasking me questions? The instructor is supposed to know all the content.’ Engaging the studentis a slow process since part of the freshman experience is to instill a culture of learning in eachstudent. Students have little to no experience with doing research, presentations, group projects, and similar secondary experiences that are taken for granted in most North American students. The necessity of teaching fundamental skills takes time and frustrates faculty who are used tostudents having foundational experience in the high school environment. Assessment of course is therefore needed. No two courses of the sametitle are taught the same way in different parts of the world, nor do they have the same coursecontent. The assessment process is carried out via course portfolios and a competency matrix(end-of-course outcomes-based survey). Students are asked to compile course portfolios andkeep track of assignments, notes, HW, reports, projects, etc. Individually, students are asked tofill out course

The NYU/Abu Dhabi projectwill see a flow of professors and students between New York and Abu Dhabi, allowingseamless transfers. The NYU/Abu Dhabi project thus meets several needs of the US university, andsimultaneously addresses a major goal of Abu Dhabi, to be identified as a hub ofknowledge transmission and creation in the region, as well as attending to the need tobuild human capacity in its citizens and its significant expatriate population. This isalso the section of the course that discusses U.S. labor legislation, employee rights, compensation, wage determination, and negotiation. Two key student projects form the basis of much class discussion. Each student is expected toresearch an assigned country in detail. Their detailed presentation to the class is expected tocover business etiquette, cultural orientation and context, business practices, negotiationpractices, business travel, business entertaining, protocol, gestures, and customs such asgreetings, meal etiquette, and dress. Country presentations are limited to the 25 or so countrieswhere our students might be expected to work. These countries include European countries likeItaly, England

However, young women are not choosing technical careers at the same rate as young men. Forengineering, it has been around 20% for several years. Numerous programs designed between1993 and 2003 to increase the woman enrichment in engineering did not make any fundamentalchange. There is no discovery of any convincing explanation or one to two useful remedies. If itis not the lack of programs, websites, goodwill, research, or budget that failing us, it must besome thing else. The engineering classroom has preserved many of its 1950s qualities whereasthe alternate programs such as medicine and law often offer a friendly and

Aschedule is another key element in a course (Table 2). Due dates and other important informationcan be posted on a calendar, another important feature of LMS. Therefore, when a student asksabout the due date for any assignment, project or exam, the instructor can tell the student that it isposted on the calendar. The calendar serves as a communication tool. It is an advance organizerto post course-related events

Introduction In an era of ever-changing technology, American education authorities found that theelementary and high schools could not provide their students with necessary knowledge andskills of science and technology. Since 1980s, America has aggressively been improving thecurriculum of science, engineering and mathematics. Therefore, in 1985, AmericanAssociation for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) launched a long-term project called“Project 2061” that committed to reform science, mathematics and technology education. international activitiesare personally exciting and rewarding, an assistant professor must maintain focus on the overall goal andchoose wisely as to where to spend their limited resources of time and energy. So the question presentsitself, “Is this the best use of my time as an assistant professor looking to gain tenure?” Publishingscholarship in journals and at conferences, obtaining funding for projects, achieving good teachingevaluations and providing good service to the department, college and university seem to be criteria forwhich promotion and tenure is granted. This paper looks at each of these criteria and how they areimpacted by international activities. The amount of time involved, cultural and language differences andlogistics of

In contrast, we even say engineers are the ones who use the library, the “ñoños” (Paola). This image of “ñoños” or nerds and engineering students not very social is supported by theparticipants’ comments about how students in engineering tend to get together more foracademic reasons like for doing homework or a team project than for social interaction.Furthermore, participants stated how the lack of time to participate in social events due to thestudents

Engineering and Language Attitudes in the U.S. A QuandaryGlobalization and the international projection of engineering In the last 30 years, the literature on engineering education has been paying increasingattention to the changes that the field has experienced due to the advancement of globalization. The goal of this concerted effort is to determine and validate the set of skills the job marketdemands from the engineer in the 21st century. There is consensus among researchers that in the context of globalization the U.S.engineering programs either adapt their curricula to meet the expectations of the globalworkforce or take the risk of becoming irrelevant [1]. Irrelevance refers to the currentcurriculum

Many minority groups and women havebeen underrepresented in the engineering education path and workforce. It is projected that moreengineering challenges will affect this broader population, and thus these individuals are neededwithin engineering.1 The demand today for employees who speak foreign languages and areinternationally savvy is also greater than ever. However, relatively few minorities enroll incollege international programs, and few choose careers that involve global work.2There is large and growing literature examining women’s and minorities experience with theengineering education process. Management style is one of devolved leadership where decision making is devolved and its dominant unit is the small project team. Students are seen as clients and partners. the 2015 Best Diversity Paper.Mejia, et al., [3] presented a paper nominated by the K-12 and Pre-College Engineering Divisionexploring Latinx adolescents’ perceptions of engineering and their engineering abilities afterparticipation in community-based design projects. Students were from working class familiesand most had parents with limited education who worked in farming or other manual laboractivities. The adolescents, ages 14-17, worked in teams to identify a problem in theircommunity and to use engineering design to solve the problem. Most of the participants changedboth their perceptions of engineering as well as their self-efficacy as they worked on theseprojects. The design experience influenced participants’ perceptions of
