A thematic analysis of the qualitative data was used to analyzethe reflective essays.This “work in progress” paper will summarize the main results of the study. Based on theanalysis, we propose interventions to assist these students in their transition from high school tocollege. Job shadowingprograms have been found to have impacts on student career trajectories. Engineering programsare expected to help students find internships and job shadowing opportunities in industry becauseit is considered a best practice for students to have this experience early in their careers [3]. Whenpaired with a near-peer mentor and participating in a job shadowing experience, research showsthat there is a positive impact on student retention in STEM programs [4].Many different aspects can influence a successful job shadowing program.
