program in fall 2012.Following the success of the BSME program, WSU used a similar model to add an electricalengineering (BSEE) program on the EvCC campus in fall 2014 and plans to start a softwareengineering (BSSE) program in fall 2016. Close collaborations have been built to leverage theknowledge, skills, and facilities of both institutions to provide a rich student experience withoften limited resources. Community college students can enroll in some of the same classes asjunior level WSU students before making the transfer, thus gaining exposure to the upperdivision experience before committing to the WSU program and providing opportunities forsocial mixing of sophomore and junior level students not typically available to communitycollege

emphasize multiple modes of reflective output, including written text, drawings, and both audio and video recordings. A culminating student project is also presented. The project is a reflective work centered on helping students to plan their personal developmenttowards becoming a “world class engineering student” through the use of gap analysis.IntroductionStudent success in engineering is not only dependent on academic talent, but also the ability todevelop the right attitudes and behaviors required to be successful in the demanding collegecoursework. At Highline College we focus on changing student behavior through the use ofreflective teaching practices. A list of successful student behaviors is provided below: • Successful engineering

, Texas was one of five majorityminority states11. These partnerships increase educational opportunities and support efforts toproduce engineers reflective of the community. This paper shares the challenges and successeslearned during the first three years of the program and the planned expansion to further recruit, retain, and graduate a more diverse engineering demographic through a pathway of co-enrollment and partnership with two-year institutions.II. Background of the PartnershipsThe Texas public education system includes 39 public universities, 50 public community collegedistricts with multiple campuses and 75 of the 409 designated Hispanic Serving Institutions(HSIs) in the United States (18.3%)12,13. 5-year STEM strategic plan, community colleges are proposed to play a key role in recruiting and preparing future scientists and engineers, especially among students from traditionally underrepresented ethnic backgrounds. Through a grant from the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Education Grants Program, the STEM Center was established at a community college in Northern California. The STEM Center integrated all STEM student support services within STEM academic study. Through leveraging multiple grants, the STEM Center provides a set of comprehensive student support services, including study groups, tutoring, STEM-specific academic counseling and career exploration, and information on internships and scholarships. Through this partnership, called REENERGIZE, it is expected that thetwo-year colleges will develop their own research capabilities in renewable energy based oncollaboration with Texas State (16, 17).Plan of OperationThe purpose of the Re-Energize program is to establish a continuous, year-around creativeresearch and development (R&D) and professional development (PD) ecosystem to empowerinstitutions of higher education who prepare students in engineering and engineering technologyin Central Texas to continue to do so with enhanced and focused knowledge

, Engineering Graphics, Materials Science, Circuits, and MATLAB Programming. In planning the new initiative, the three colleges agreed that they would develop lab courses thatemphasized inquiry-based approaches requiring authentic problem-solving and studentinteraction, in an effort to enhance learning relative to many existing online and face-to-facelecture courses. Educational research has often shown that passive instructor-centered lecturingis less effective than approaches that actively engage students in the learning process.4,5 This isparticularly true in engineering because of its emphasis on developing higher-order problemsolving skills. For example, studies of introductory materials science students have demonstratedthat the more constructive

for academic success.1. IntroductionWith the increasing demand for a skilled and technically savvy workforce in the United States, addressing retention problems in the first two years of college is a promising and cost-effectivestrategy to address this need. A recent Committee on STEM Education National Science andTechnology Council report Federal Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics(STEM) Education 5-Year Strategic Plan indicates that the United States needs make STEMeducation a priority. To achieve that goal, the Department of Education has committed $4.3billion to encourage states to develop “comprehensive strategies to improve achievement andprovide rigorous curricula in STEM subjects; partner with local STEM institutions

ITEST, IUSE, and STEM-C19have called for proposals that attempt to get young people and under-represented minorities andfemales interested in STEM topics and computer coding. On January 30th of this year (2016),President Obama announced a $4.2 Billon educational initiative called “Computer Science ForAll”. This proposal is a plan to reboot computer science education programs in what the WhiteHouse is calling an "Eisenhower moment" for technical education. This three-year initiativewould help train teachers, equip classrooms, and develop new class materials20. All this in aneffort to increase student knowledge about the computer and how to apply it to solve problemsand perform useful functions.A Solution?Recently, the CSET program at STCC has

Thehope in providing these opportunities for social interaction is that the students will feel a strongerconnection to the department and university, build stronger relationships with each other, andthrive academically and socially because they are having positive experiences. The plan is tocontinue to offer social activities at least once or twice per semester going forward.4. AssessmentProgram SuccessThe peer mentor program is in the first year of implementation.
