junioryear. The laboratory lasts for approximately three hours and the students attend every otherweek. The typical class size is 12 to 15 students with lab group sizes of 3 to 4 students. In thesecond laboratory session, students perform mechanical sieve and hydrometer analysis (ASTMD422) and liquid and plastic limit tests (ASTM D4318) to classify soils using soil classificationsystems (e.g. Unified Soil Classification System). However, students typically express frustrationwith the standard test procedures to measure the liquid and plastic limits. Such mutual learning interaction between students is beneficial because students will either be required to articulate their knowledge of a subject in ways that another student can understand or will profit from getting an alternative perspective from a peer on how to approach a problem.For the author’s courses, students are provided a variety of ways to demonstrate learning of thecourse material.
