One of the most successful parts of the program development has been the creation ofthe Civil Engineering core curriculum and major. The authors, all West Point engineeringinstructors involved with NMAA’s civil engineering development, discovered many benefitsfrom providing this academic assistance which improved their teaching abilities. This example teaches theimportance of atom economy, the use of shorter and efficient chemical reactions,as well as the safety of the chemicals used in the synthesis process.
