Rather than recitingresearch, a gender equity assessment tool was designed to present the current findings in theliterature and to evaluate the WI participants’ awareness of gender equity. The PhD team thenfacilitated gender equity discussions with the teachers and counselors by soliciting examplesfrom the group. Next, the participants worked in small teams to identify gender bias in textbooksand to examine biases in teacher-to-student interactions through a case study analysis. Typically, these arrangements work best when the student has family or othersupport for staying in the area during the summer. The Next Generation Science Standards: For States, ByStates (NGSS) is an example of a more-recent effort (a collaboration among 26 states) to improvescience curriculum by focusing on disciplinary core ideas (content), science and engineering practices(SEPs) and crosscutting concepts (CCs). The NGSS curriculum places emphasis on vertical alignmentof K-12 science concepts in such a way that teaches SEPs and CCs in context where more-traditionalscience standards “express these dimensions as separate entities” (NGSS Lead States).
