Dr. Cornwell has received an SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 1992, and the Dean’s Outstanding Teacher award at Rose-Hulman in 2000, the Rose-Hulman Board of Trustee’s Outstanding Scholar Award in 2001, and the Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award in 2019 from the Mechanics Division of ASEE. The EdX instructional videos provided valuable examples for modeling and simulatingphysical problems using ANSYS Workbench, which supported the hands-on projects assigned tostudents. The expected learning outcome was for students to demonstrate the ability to set up,analyze, and post-process an engineering problem using commercial analysis software. Having completed a Master of Science in Engineering degree in 2019, Michael is continuing in his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Engineering Education. His drive toward this field of study is to cultivate skills and knowledge that will better prepare him for a career focused on combating human-trafficking. Michael is seeking to find a way to integrate technical engineering principles, scientific research practices, and a broad network of motivated leaders to end human trafficking. creativeproblem solving and educational foci outside of traditional engineering disciplines, including ininterdisciplinary areas such as robotics and energy studies as well as in thematic areas thatotherwise could only be covered via electives such as community development, corporatesustainability, and STEM teaching. A “focus area” component of the curriculum was included asa mechanism for achieving these diverse goals.Our program’s first incoming cohort arrived Fall 2019, so those students suffered the disruptionsof the Covid-19 pandemic in the midst of their second college semester. Nevertheless, 17students graduated in May 2023—our first full cohort of program graduates. Despite thepandemic disruptions, we continued to iterate and improve our program
education in 2040 as more accessible,inclusive, and equitable, highlighting the important role of community colleges in making thishappen [3]. An important need emerged, “to put less value on degree and more on competencies,experiences, and skills.” This need was supported by employers’ preference for “critical thinkerswho can apply learned information and skills to become specialists with on-the-job training” [3].In Broadening Participation in STEM: Effective Methods, Practices, and Programs,Wilson-Kennedy, et al., (2019) compiled fourteen case study programs and their high impactpractices (HIPs) that improved inclusion and success of underrepresented persons in STEM [4].Importantly, some of the HIPS are related to Experiential Learning, defined
