The average course grade was 3.89 out of 5.0 scale, and the average numerical gradeearned by the students was 2.95 out of 4.0 scale. From the students’ feedback, some of themhave shown positive appreciation of lab organization that helped their learning saying the labmaterial was very well thought out and interesting. After they take these courses, they continuewith their education with other courses such as Capstone project courses. Students were required to use CATME(Comprehensive Assessment of Team Member Effectiveness), a web-based tool, to ratethemselves and their teammates on a 5-point scale for each of five teamwork dimensions(Contributing to Team’s Work; Interacting with Teammates; Keeping the Team on Track;Expecting Quality; Having Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities), and to provide writtenfeedback entries for each team member. Our data analysis indicated that most of the writtencomments were related to “Contributing to Team’s Work,” while other comments were non-specific (e.g., “Awesome teammate” or “Average”).Research suggests that training and practice can enhance peer feedback quality [4], [5]. , there are three ways that quickly come tomind to bring the courses together: 1) an Introduction to Engineering course, 2) a Capstoneproject, and 3) an Integrated Experience course. Many institutions already use an Introduction toEngineering course, and showing the “big picture” early is a good method to generate interest inmechanical engineering. The Capstone project has the benefits already cited but may not includesome of the disciplines and allows students to work in their areas of interest. Called the Major Qualifying Project (MQP), this finalproject serves as ECE students’ capstone design experience.The ECE Design course was originally motivated by assessment5 indicating the need to improvestudents’ understanding of the process of design in preparation for the MQP. A second objectivefor the ECE Design course is to assure that students, who typically take the course at the end ofthe second year, are able to apply the fundamentals of ECE in the context of an independent,team-based design project. mentors.EWB-USA projects can and often do span multiple semesters or even years.The curriculum for EPICS can accommodate projects in any phase of the design process and hassupported the current pilot project over the two semesters with plans to extend into the nextacademic year.Opportunities for the EPICS/EWB-USA credits to count as more, including capstone projects isunder discussion. The relationship with EPICS and EWB-USA will continue to evolve and maylook different at different institutions. The new biomedical engineering curriculum consists of 130credit hours spanning a 4-year academic plan.
