exercise. A five-pointscoring rubric has been defined for each assessment exercise to clarify performances at levelsranging from novice to expert.Table 2 presents an example scoring rubric. This rubric for the Professional Growth paper is usedto score the paper with respect to (a) personal growth achievement and understanding and (b)written communication. For the personal growth score, factors considered include: the student’sunderstanding of the need, goals for achieving growth, plan to achieve growth, and demonstratedachievement of growth. For the written communication performance, word usage, spelling andpunctuation, sentence and paragraph structure, and overall effectiveness are considered. For eachof these two scores, the scorer may check

The student teams assessed the problem and developed one or moresolutions. The class used an industry approach to the design. Each team was lead by a teamleader. These lead personnel, students, in turn, were responsible to the overall project manager, another student in the class. The students together chose the best design alternative under theconstraints, such as scheduling, power

population? Middle school is the key;this is the time when many kids decide they are not interested in science, or not good atmath. Most never get the chance to learn about engineering. For the past five years, we have been working with middle school teachers to bringengineering teaching kits into their classrooms. An Engineering Teaching Kit (ETK) is aset of lesson plans focused on a well-defined set of concepts in science or math. Whatmakes these lesson plans unique is the final Design Challenge. The students must use theknowledge and methods they have learned to design and build something.Every ETK introduces the engineering design process, and each requires middle schoolstudents to design and build a device, machine, or system to achieve a goal

WKU has developed a Quality Enhancement Plan which states that “Students will engage with communities other than their own in purposeful learning activities that explicitly address their capacity and responsibility to contribute to community and society.“1Each department across the campus has developed venues for engaging students. One methodthat the university uses to measure engagement is through the National Survey

The MET associate degree program is essentially identical at all threecampuses, with all courses transferring seamlessly into the baccalaureate MET program. In preparation for their first TC2K-based reviews, the department extended itseducational processes to incorporate formal assessment and evaluation of programoutcomes and educational objectives. The existing foundation for the department’seducation processes included a departmental strategic plan that defines the department’score values, beliefs, mission, and vision. Students may choose among several elective courses in a particular category or subject, which are listed in the University catalogue [2]. Courses that are planned to be offered by the Mechanical and Energy Engineering Department are designated with the prefix “MEEN.” It must be pointed out that almost the entire freshman program of study may be taken outside the Mechanical and Energy Engineering Department. With the loss of manufacturing from the city’s economy over the last 20 years, much of the Valley reverted to brownfields. Planning for redevelopment of the area began in earnest about 12 years ago. The city promoted a comprehensive planning process, with involvement by the widest possible group of stakeholders. Menomonee Valley Partners was organized as a result. Menomonee Valley Partners continues to be closely involved in the ongoing redevelopment efforts in the Valley.Trolling for Projects: the

Tuition isusually financed by parents, scholarships, summer and part-time work, and financial aid. Manyof the University’s students are first-generation college students. COMPUTER ENGINEERING DEGREE PROGRAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA By G E Crain, James J Sluss, Jr, Monte P Tull, and Sam C LeeAbstractA new requirement for assessment of graduate programs at the University of Oklahoma wasestablished in 2003. Program Goals and Program Objectives were established and reported inour earlier work. Outcomes of the Program Objectives can be measured with students active inthe program. The tactical plan to assess the effectiveness of meeting the Objectives of AdvancedDegree programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering is discussed in this paper. Keyelements of the plan include1) identifying strategic opportunities for measurement,2) developingthe instruments and processes to collect this data, 3

did was a division of labor, however, most of the machining and designing of process plans we did together. This allowed us to remain on the same page, and always to understand what the other person was doing and why. An important part of teamwork is compatibility. My partner and I were fortunate enough to work well together, however, this may not always be the case. In the engineering world, personality screenings are often done to determine which people should work together on a team, and which should not. When personality screenings aren't done, it is important to be able to work together nonetheless, and to focus on the project goals as opposed to personal differences. Many people learned this lesson while

difficult-to-teach topics, and as transfer tasks to test studentunderstanding. One of the enduring conundrums in engineering design is that designers, regardless of level of experience, can end up with final products that look remarkably similar totheir first sketches or prototypes. A number of explanations for this problem, which has beendubbed “functional fixedness” (Cross, 2000) and “idea fixation” (Sachs, 1999), have beenproposed for this phenomenon where little seems to get learned or gained through cycles ofdesign iterations. One hypothesis that this study investigates is the notion that idea fixation, especially when done by beginning designers, is simply due to the novices not noticingweaknesses in their current plan or prototype. If all

Quejchip’s potablewater comes from natural mountain springs located at various elevations throughout theirvillage. As the village’s population of 460 residents grows, they will inevitably buildnew homes and move up the mountainside. In 2007, the village purchased a spring at thehighest altitude available in hopes of building a distribution system for the upper part ofthe village located above the existing water system. After our initial site assessment visitin June 2007 and a year of subsequent planning and designing, our EWB student chapterreturned to Quejchip in June, 2008 to

Students were then grouped into teams that weremaintained throughout the course. The project initially progressed slowly as students selected overall specifications, determinedfunctional blocks and developed block designs. Weekly project team meetings required teams tocommunicate their progress and any discoveries to the remaining teams. As the projectprogressed, initial designs and test criteria were updated to reflect student discoveries relating tocomponents, manufacturing and measuring capabilities. All specifications, test procedures, anddesigns for the entire project were completed individually by each team and submitted to allother teams. Submissions were

need is for graduates with the ability to crossmultidisciplinary boundaries and work with both electrical and mechanical systems, such asrobotics and sophisticated factory lines. Because the BSE program was developed in such a wayas to allow for variation in a student's program of study, a combination of elective courses, fromboth the electrical and mechanical areas of interest, was outlined and presented to the USI facultyand EAB for consideration in 2008. This mixture of electrical and mechanical studies, nowcommonly referred to as Mechatronics, was well-received by both the faculty and the EAB, andseveral students have already initiated this plan of study.Review of Other Mechatronics ProgramsMechatronics is relatively new field, with the

reminders come. Some faculty members think of teaching as a time wasterbecause a mere satisfactory in teaching, with lots of journal publications, is enough for tenure; sowhy worry. Bad, ineffective teaching can be a time waster since students will require more timeto gain an understanding of the material. Other “Wasted Time” includes meetings that aresuddenly scheduled that are “good” for us. Some department meetings, lectures, and colloquiawhere attendance is expected stand in the way of planned activities from the “Effective Time”category. These activities are then thought as time wasters. The inability to say no torequirements makes faculty feel that these are of no value especially when compared to researchand publication work. Students who are typical in their Junior termof studies apply up to one year or more in advance to study abroad. They basically preparetheir course plan for each of their academic terms until they graduate. One of the mainfunctions of the faculty advisor is to make sure that the courses offered at the host schooltransfer back (with a Pass or Fail grade). Due to high demand for study abroad in theMechanical Engineering at Kettering, the minimum cumulative grade point to apply for studyabroad as well as to pass a course at the host school has
