some time in the university laboratories, contribute their real-life industrial experience and also take some refresher courses. This is also anotherway of technology transfer within a country – between the industries and academia – where both gainvalue: a win-win situation! In knowledge transfer from preceptor to disciple, from mentor to mentee (Guru to Sishya, in Sanskrit),the transmitting and the receiving ends of knowledge and the knowledge itself have to be in unison. Thesame is true in the domain of arts: the artist, the art work and the observer must be in unison. John Deweyemphasized this point particularly in the realm of art education [6]. In technology, the closest that comesto the arts is architecture. In engineering we are just one

attitudinal barriers. For example, students withphysical disabilities often face architectural barriers such as laboratory table height, inaccessibleequipment or instrument, and lack of elevators to reach facilities [17]. A non-inclusive schoolculture and negative faculty attitudes toward disabilities greatly impact students’ commitment tothe engineering major and career. Efforts to increase retention of students with disabilities andother marginalized students include curriculum redesign and greater diversity when hiringfaculty [21] [22].Self-Efficacy: Self-efficacy, the belief in one’s ability to succeed, has been found to be a criticalskill for students with disabilities. consider engineering as a major. University faculty havea role to play in encouraging and giving direction to high school studies in mathematics, science, and engineering so that students’ experiences can help them become interested and engaged inengineering studies. This can be done through meetings to discuss college expectations inengineering, inviting K-12 teachers to the college campus to visit laboratories and attendlectures, or providing professional development that helps them understand more about theengineering process and ways to better prepare students for college. Studies that delve intostudent reasons for choosing engineering as a major and future career can help counselors andfaculty members in secondary schools, colleges, and

]. However, to date, the large-scale production is limited due to the relativelylow device efficiencies (~14%), high-price catalytic materials and high-temperature processingconditions [5]. New materials and structures, together with an optimized manufacturing process, are needed to lower production costs while maintaining efficiency such that DSSCs areeconomically viable. In this project, we study the working principle of DSSCs, fabricate DSSCdevices in the laboratory, test their performance using basic equipment, and propose the route tomass-produce DSSCs. The objective of this project is for participants to identify the key factorsthat affect DSSC performance, manufacturing time, and cost, and explore the manufacturing routesthat could push the

This is usually achieved throughstructured laboratory-based courses and project-based learning courses throughout theircurriculum. In the EET program at Kennesaw State University, the Capstone Design courseexperience was offered through a menu of project-based senior design courses that students gotto choose from based on their specific electrical areas of interest. This served the program wellfor several years but did not always offer the students a uniform design experience as thatdepended on the instructor(s) teaching those classes in a given semester. As a result, the EETfaculty concluded that in order to offer a more uniform experience to each cohort of students, itwas best

engineering laboratories in the thirdyear. The final year consists of traditional capstone design projects, similar to those at mostaccredited programs. As noted in the previous section, retention can be improved by many different factors. One ofthe results of having a project course with professional skills every semester during the entiredegree program is that as students work in teams and present so that they get to know each otherwell and develop a community. As already noted, a community aids in student retentionthroughout the entire four-year sequence [4]. Particularly in the second year, more benefit isgained when a focus is placed on directing students toward their future careers and providingmentorship to aid their motivation to continue in

theinfrastructure support that can be offered to the students. At CU Boulder, students have access tostaff and facilities (as described above in Course Execution). These facilities help improve thequality of the final product, and provide the opportunity for students to work on projects outside ofscheduled laboratory time. Students self report working an average of 10-12 hours/week based onFaculty Course Questionnaires, with only 5 hours/week being contact hours with the instructor.Because the students turn over their projects to clients, a certain level of project quality andprofessionalism is required. This makes the course ideal for students who have already completed afirst-year projects course or transfer students who are further along in their

To address this, miniaturized hands-on modules have been developed to compelstudent engagement in sophomore and junior level engineering classes, specifically within theheat transfer and fluid mechanics classroom context. These highly visual low-cost desktoplearning modules (LC-DLMs) have been shown to improve student understanding compared topassive lectures, especially at higher Bloom’s levels such as evaluation and creation [4-5].Even with significant data to support the fact that active learning leads to more cognitive gainscompared to traditional lecture-based teaching, there are still perceived
