Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible, open licensed materials that can includetext, media, or other digital formats and are created for teaching, learning, and supporting research[1–4]. OER and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are changing the ways in which peoplelearn all over the world [5, 6]. These new approaches to education are a response to the lack ofaccess to and the increasing cost of education throughout the developing and developed world.Overcoming the disparity in educational access worldwide, and even just within the United States,is a long-term goal of OER and MOOCs, but to be successful will require the support of gov-ernments and agencies that regulate education [7]. Another benefit to OER is a reduced cost tostudents

curricular level due to the fact that the results were not sharedwith other faculty members of the same curricular block or area. Neither were improvementactions shared, thus in this aspect, faculty efforts were autonomous and isolated.Beginning in 2011, we implemented curricular reform based on the CDIO Syllabus 2.0 [5] [6],which takes the evolution and consolidation of knowledge and skills along the curriculumbuilding blocks into account. At that point, we used the CDIO Syllabus 2.0 (linked to Standard3) as a resource for curriculum benchmarking. We did not use the complete CDIO framework, which includes twelve Standards focused on program improvement. As a result, the curricularcontent of the courses of a given block or area began to exhibit

sametextbook, students often perceive the course sections differently. Different combinations ofonline and paper homework formats were used, and the problems assigned varied in volume, implementation, and complexity. In each section, different pedagogies were used, and the depthto which some topics were covered varied with the instructor. Because each section tookdifferent exams graded by different instructors, there was no uniform measure of students’preparedness levels for later engineering mechanics courses. This paper describes efforts toimprove consistency across sections by implementing a common course framework developedby the instructors teaching the different sections. This framework includes common online andon-paper homework assignments, and

These include the ability to: • grade student submissions online in any location, • change the point value associated with a particular mistake once and apply to the entire population, • quickly reference similar mistakes instead of rewriting the same comment, • retain a digital record of the student work, and • return feedback digitally outside of classroom time. The online rubric-based grading tool can facilitate feedback that is prompt, equitable, explanatory and formative. Such tools can inform opportunities to re-teach and re-test in

Thermodynamics courses, large enrollment was the primary reason forintroduction of the discussion sections. It was agreed upon by the faculty committee that studentsshould be given the opportunity to interact with the instructor of the courses in smaller groups, toenhance engagement with the learning material. For the remaining two courses, high studentworkload and the lack of time to cover the syllabus in the allotted time steered the decisiontowards adding another credit unit for that those courses, and this was accomplished byintroducing discussion sections. Details about the courses such as number of students, number ofTeaching Assistants, and the duration of discussion section are indicated in Table 1.Table 1: Details about the enrollment, TAs, and

All scenarios now reference examples in calculus, chemistry, and physicscourse to make them more widely applicable across a broader range of science and engineeringdisciplines. The authors offer suggestions on how to utilize the videos along with additionalacademic integrity-related resources, such as syllabus language, a reflection assignment, anassignment cover sheet, and a form prohibiting sharing course-related documents.1. IntroductionAcademic integrity issues are among the most stressful that faculty face, and the statistics onstudent cheating rates and attitudes about cheating are troubling [1][2][3

For the workshops and other shorter instruction sessions, instructors are chosen for thetopic that is being taught. There are even cases of the material being made available online via aYouTube. So, not only are the types of instruction variable, there are also multiple methodsinstructors can utilize to teach a session. This paper presents a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to RDM instruction using currentliterature and the authors’ insight on their own recent course. Reviewing the successes andlessons learned from credit classes, seminars and workshop styled courses provided guidance forthe creation of a 3

Moreover, cooperative learning has repeatedly proven to have positiveimpacts on students’ educational experience [3,5]. Cooperative learning, which can beincorporated in classes of any size, enables students to improve their social and team-workingskills. In addition, cooperative learning provides an opportunity for students to discuss theirquestions and overcome challenges within their groups without forming long lines outside theinstructor’s office during office hours.Nevertheless, for certain technical courses in engineering curriculum

articles follow the same strategies they can use in their own courses; so facultymembers experience first-hand the types of writing they implement in their courses. Also, several of the readings offer practical guidance for incorporating and assessing student writingassignments. The second half of the MIWE course is largely focused on allowing facultymembers to revise the class they intend to teach MIWE-style. They revise the syllabus anddesign at least one formal writing assignment that will be added to the course work.Throughout the MIWE course, faculty are encouraged to view writing as process rather thanproduct; this places more emphasis on the learning that happens during and as a result of writingrather than on the grade that a given writing

If,however, a student is not exposed to metacognition at the freshman level, Can such exposure stillhelp that student?A hypothesis of the instant work is that students at all academic levels may benefit from anunderstanding of their learning processes, and behaviors proven to enhance learning. In the fall 2017 semester, students in a first semester thermodynamics course (mostlysophomores and juniors) and students in a fluid mechanics course (mostly juniors) werepresented information about metacognition, roughly following the McGuire [1] model. After thefirst exam in each course, the students were asked to complete a questionnaire. Two brief, interactive lectures were then given introducing metacognition, Bloom’s taxonomy, and

. Undergraduate students can receive jobs in and around the same locationof their alma mater, which leads to the need to gain knowledge of the geography and populationto be a successful transportation engineer in that area. Turochy [22] gave the example of “aninstitution located in a large metropolitan area may place a higher value on a multimodalapproach (including coverage of mass transit systems) than an institution in a small collegetown” (p. 202).The increase of information technology applications, including simulations, in recent years hascreated the need to educate future engineers on the use of them and how to interpret theiroutputs. This adds another topic to the already expansive course syllabus. The fact thattransportation agencies are

Ella’s challenges with executive functioning combined with her high anxiety and former reliance on a regular planning with instructors may not coincide well with a course that is individualistic and self-paced. Such a course may not typically have a syllabus with clearly defined deadlines. Also, because instructors and faculty members are responding in real time to student work, being able to anticipate or plan for long-term learning objectives becomes very

Originally we had students upload their plan to Microsoft SharePoint, whichwas not part of our university’s LMS. For the fall 2016 semester we created a section for allentering first year students in Canvas, our LMS. Students already use Canvas for all of theiruniversity courses and therefore are familiar with its design and structure. Most studies on entrepreneurship education have analyzed psychological outcomes, such asself-efficacy and entrepreneurial intent [13]. Few of them have explored short and long-termeffects on professional competencies and career goals [14]. Some of them have used classroomassessment techniques and academic records to understand students’ conceptions ofentrepreneurial learning [15], [16], but more efforts are needed to explore how students learn aboutentrepreneurship as they develop ownership of their ideas [17].
