To test the students’ power of observation, I will devote one lab to tracing water lines in a laboratory anddiscussing related issues (e.g., Was there a floor drain?). To get them thinking “out of the box”, we will discussalternative methods to verify an instrument reading. I often tell the “Angels on a Pin” story4. To strengthen theirskill at estimating values, we will count ceiling tile or concrete blocks to determine the dimensions of aclassroom. None of these traits could be demonstrated on a timed test, so get creative on how students candemonstrate those estimating skills other than through traditional testing.I try to build the exam well ahead of the exam day. Lab 3 then gives the student teams the opportunity toexperience an electronics laboratory exercise through the construction and then utilization ofan active high pass filter that extracts the oscillometric signal from the cuff pressure signal. Teams of two students are given an electronic kit. The kit contains a breadboard, wirecutter and stripper, needle-nose pliers, and electronic parts that include resistors, capacitors,and a discreet operational amplifier. He has previously served as Proposal Engineer and Proposal Engineer- ing Supervisor at Grob System, Inc., and Software Engineer at Shaum Manufacturing, Inc. He has held a number of leadership and advisory positions in various entrepreneurial ventures. He is currently a KEEN (Kern Entrepreneurial Education Network) Fellow, and has served as a Faculty Fellow at the Jet Propul- sion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., and an Invited Professor at INRIA Rhone-Alpes, Monbonnot, France.
