platforms for teaching some IT concepts are strong.Trends in IT towards much more diverse computing platforms that are integrated into the realworld indicate that IT students should pay more attention to hardware systems.Hardware adds a significant dimension to the learning experience of IT students. Commonlyavailable systems provide the necessary elements for introducing hardware into IT courses. Thebenefits to students are clear. instruction, students work in a self-directed manner to interpret outcomes based oninvestigation of their own question. Here, we describe a cost-effective, sustainable biomaterialslaboratory for juniors using inquiry-guided instruction at a large public university.The four laboratory components focused on key biomaterial topics and lasted for two-to-threeweeks. During the first week, students were provided with available materials pertaining to themodule and worked with group members and instructor(s) to devise and test a custom hypothesisinstead of using “cookie cutter” lab manuals. After a temporary list of projects is generated, the projects are grouped by discipline.Effort is made to have at least one project in each civil engineering subfield-structuralengineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, and construction or multiplecombinations of these depending on faculty interest and expertise. Soltani et al.’s study revealed that engineering programs that aresponsored by industry partners displayed a closer match between the requirements of employersand the interests of students. In programs where industry partners sponsored internships, studentshad a chance to develop skills required to find jobs, academics developed closer links to theindustry, and employers had a chance to develop and retain professionals in their businesses.
