, may result in fewer minority studentsas well [1], [6].Fear of racism – research suggests that students who are susceptible to stereotype threat(potential interpretations of ones’ actions through an existing negative lens) often respond byadjusting behavior patterns to minimize or avoid similar situations [11]. Students of color andmore often African American college students at predominantly white institutions are oftenalready vulnerable to such negativism. Since study abroad is rarely required as part of theundergraduate curriculum, they are more likely to decline the opportunity even in the presence ofother incentives [11], [6]. Studying abroad is often marketed as a means to improve ones’ crosscultural experience. For the minority student

This supports the need forformal introduction of mechatronics in the curriculum, because this skill set is required toeffectively compete in the robotics competitions and to successfully complete senior designprojects.6 ConclusionsThis work focused on broadening participation in engineering by introducing mechatronicsthrough experiential hands-on learning in the undergraduate Introduction to Robotics course.Although this was a first small study done on this topic in the ME program at UTA, theassessment data indicates the students lack a sufficient background in mechatronics to effec-tively compete in robotic competitions and integrate mechatronics components in the seniorprojects. However, some students from

From these goals and commitments, programs such asthe RISE first year seminar were developed. The RISE first year seminar started as PRiSE, Promoting Retention in Science and Engineering,in the 2013 academic year. Students joined PRiSE to build community, receive mentorship, tutoring, and academic advising as well as be supported by the Center for STEM Diversity.Since its inception, PRiSE has transformed into RISE, the program it is today. During thistransformation, RISE has grown into an official Registrar approved two-semester seminar coursewith a curriculum focused on building a cohort of students who can support one another as theybuild their sense of belonging, self-efficacy and academic expertise. )AbstractResearch has shown that study abroad yields the greatest educational outcomes for interculturalcompetency when it is couched in a curriculum that encourages preparation before and reflectionafter the abroad experience. To enhance the educational outcomes of engineering students’ studyabroad experiences, we developed a certificate program that couples an abroad experience withadditional coursework in global topics and a reflection assignment. The certificate program isbased on a similar program at Northern Arizona University, and is otherwise rare in our peerschools. The goal of the program is to encourage students to engage in coursework and experiencesthat cultivate cultural competency, and to recognize students’ efforts when they do so. In

The case study presented in this paper illustrates how thinking aboutsolution diversity, and the ways in which project design and instructional techniques affordsolution diversity, is one possible metric to consider when designing an engineering project. These characteristics of care and caring made it a natural fit for the working with approach. In addition to discussing what care means and how it has been described in literature, students were asked to arrive at their own individual care statements. In doing so, they were able to apply the concepts of care and caring themselves and arrive at an articulation that enables them to put their care into practice.     In addition to developing individual care statements, the students were requested to ensure that their individual care statements and the

It is largely the capstone project thatdistinguishes the coordinate major from a minor. This area of application of student’s studies in computer science is usually this student’s primarymajor. However, any subject in which a student has completed extensive course work (or obtainedequivalent experience) can serve as the area of application. However, most are offered in each department to fulfill the need for the department.Laboratory exercises play an important role in engineering education1-3. They provide theopportunity for students to work on modern machines, tools used in industry. There are differentways to deliver labs: individual lab exercises and project based lab exercises.Project-based learning is a dynamic method to inspire students to obtain a deeper understandingof the subjects, apply and integrate knowledge they are studying. Normally a project is acomplex task, which involves design thinking, decision making, problem solving, etc.2Laboratory work helps students learn actively, hence it has been widely applied to

TheMSE seminar is based on an academic success strategies course developed at the start of thepandemic that emphasized time management, wellness, and reflective change [28]. Both courseswere taught by department faculty and integrated significant peer interactions. This study had two research questions: (1) How do students perceive belonging in the two engineering departments? EWBprojects, with their explicit social justice mission, has already been shown to have a positive effecton students, attitudes towards community service, and career expectations [2–7]. Other work hasdocumented the effects of service learning participation on meeting ABET learning outcomes [6]and providing global engineering competencies [8, 9]. While the benefits of service learning forstudent education are enticing, there is also some evidence that participation in projects with localcommunities, in contrast to internationally-based field work, can achieve the same studentoutcomes in terms of technical and professional skills [10, 11].Integration of service learning into the curriculum also necessitates the consideration of impactson the

is one of the largest factors influencing a student’s decision to leaveengineering [1]. This can often be exacerbated for underrepresented students when compoundedwith existing structural and systematic issues such as the lack of visible professional role models, exposure and/or access to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), under-resourcedpublic schools and inadequate preparation to matriculate into a university-level engineeringprogram. Efforts to answer the call to increase diversity and inclusion in engineering should startwith an understanding of how people from groups marginalized in engineering experienceengineering. Also, candidates may prefer explaining problems with a pencil on thepaper or on a computer using an integrated development environment. Next, they suggested usingproblems actually encountered at the company, since many puzzles are not reflective of real-worldsituations. Such tasks are seen as giving an unfair advantage to candidates just out of school. Finally, they propose problem solving “as colleagues, not as examiners” a recommendation whichhighlights that rather than an intense interrogation the process should be balanced, and shouldinvolve working together to solve issues, and that this could even be accomplished with other“potential teammates.”In addition to the two
