recruit first-generation students and their families for the 2022cohort and beyond. As a result of these efforts, the SD-FIRST program had 59 applicants during the first applicationcycle. As an NSF S-STEM award, the SD-FIRST program allowed for 15 scholars in the firstcohort and awarded $5,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, per scholar. During this time, theteam was able to work with the SD Mines Center for Alumni Relations and Advancement(CARA) to secure a donation to the school in the form of a gift of 10 additional scholarshippositions (a total of $5,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, for 10 scholars). With this generousdonation, the SD-FIRST program was able to award scholarships to 25 total students. All 59applications were reviewed by

terms like “reflection AND education” returnedmany more results.Students are suffering from a phenomenon exemplified by T. S. Elliot’s quote, “We had theexperience but missed the meaning” [23]. For students, the university experience today is aconstant cycle of attempting to absorb new information, learning just enough to completeassignments, turning in those assignments, and moving on to the next. Educators typically provideample opportunity to practice skills, but little opportunity to reflect upon them. Academia does notalways approach reflection with the most favorable perspective. It is often seen as a nonsensicaloutpour of emotions or a simple summary of events, neither of which are compatible with therigorous and “objective” world of

In the next section, we will focus on a case of a high schoolprogram and its connections to a university program that might offer some lessons for how thecreation of a pipeline might be supported.connection between college and high school programs An intrapreneurship training program for electrical and computer engineering studentswas implemented through an NSF S-STEM grant at an R1 university. They also need to be able to apply thekey concept of the question to other contexts through selectively abstracting core knowledge.Generating explanations about their thought process when answering exam questions provides astructured way for students to develop metacognitive skills. Such ability to abstract out the corestructural information from a given context has been promoted by self-explanation [14] andself-testing [24]-[25] in which students have a chance to metacognitively revisit the scope oftheir understanding of the materials.Along with metacognition, the expectation to explain one’s thoughts to someone else

recognized that one of the primary reasons students are unable to transfer theirknowledge into new problem-solving situations is because they perceive new information as theend goal, as opposed to a tool that can be used to solve other problems. As an example, theauthors mention how astronomers in the early 1600’s frequently dealt with tedious computationsinvolving big numbers. When the mathematical concept of logarithms was invented, theyrecognized the concept as a tool that could be used to make the problems they were solvingmuch more manageable. On the other hand, when students in the modern era are introduced tologarithms, they tend to think of them as a problem instead of a tool. They cannot appreciatethem the way the 17th century astronomers

-rebound process, and 3)indirect policies with equity impacts. Our data does suggest that underrepresented women ofcolor are less likely to be enrolled in undergraduate engineering education over time in anti-affirmative action states (independent of the specific ban timing). A key take-away from thisfinding is that affirmative action bans may be a symptom of preexisting “chilly” conditionswithin a state. In comparison to other historically excluded groups, UWOCE students maytherefore be more concerned with or impacted by the perceived social and political climate of thestates in which they seek to study. We conclude by echoing Ong et al.’s argument [25] that thechanges necessary to foster belonging for all students in engineering education

This method is effective forimplementing new content or revising courses and broader curricula in any discipline. Thebackward design method begins by asking two questions: 1) What do I want my students to beable to think and do by the end of this course? 2) How will my students be different by the end ofthe course?Lessons Learned: Granda found the EOP Framework to be flexible to implement. Facultymembers can choose which student learning outcome(s) their course will address.
