].Expectations for TAs:While research shows that TAs believe that content knowledge is the sole key to being aneffective teacher [14], students have a much different idea of what TAs should bring to the table.In a study of seven laboratory and lecture courses in environmental and water resourcesengineering, students were asked to rank what makes an effective TA from 17 categories ofintellectual excitement and interpersonal rapport developed by the American Society of CivilEngineers Body of Knowledge (ASCE-BOK) to describe effective teaching [22]. 21.3% ofstudents ranked fair grading practices as their first choice for what makes for an effective TAfollowed by explaining difficult concepts well (14.9%), coming to the classroom or laboratoryprepared (13.3

The use of outside speakers also has its perils since lastminute changes in their schedules often overrides their appearance in class. Needless to say,contingency lectures and/or speakers should be available.The commitment of individual faculty in both CAEE201 and CAEE210 generally amounts totwo lectures and the oversight of a two-hour laboratory during one week of the 10-week term.The laboratory in CAEE201 is mostly computational in nature and is usually overseen by thefaculty member. . Student testing was extremely valuable in identifyingactivities that needed improvement and items in the manual that needed revision . Based on theirfeedback, several changes were implemented to further promote discovery learning. Testing withformer students is highly encouraged for anyone developing new laboratory experiments. The revised experiments are being implemented with students in the “Design of MachineElements” course in the Spring 2014. Feedback from students and teaching assistants has con-firmed the value of the experiments in engaging students in the analysis and design of mechani-cal springs.
