Changes in key personnel or personnel’s working hours resulting in no clear key 1 point of contact as many of the initial negotiations took place at a very senior level and these are not the members of staff delivering the outputs for the partnership. Each partner has different modes of operation for term times, teaching loads and 1,5 other duties of staff external to the UNITWIN. This means it is difficult to get a time that all partners are able to dedicate time to the project. , 2002). There is a positivecorrelation between a student’s familiarity with STEM careers and his/her interest inpursuing STEM professions (Clewell & Campbell, 2002; Robinson & Kenny, 2003). Theshortage of students enrolling in engineering courses could be linked to their insufficientknowledge of the actual tasks engineers do at their jobs on a daily basis.Previous research suggests that interest and positive attitudes towards engineering need tobe developed as early as middle school, so that students will desire to enroll in high schoolcourses centered around science and math (Akos et. al., 2007). Without initiating thisessential academic path, students are less likely to be academically competent and may loseinterest in pursuing

. Hierarchicalregression analysis is “a method of regression analysis in which independentvariables are entered into the regression equation in a sequence specified bythe researcher in advance” (Vogt, 1999, p. 129). This approach yields moreconservative estimates of statistical relationships, thereby reducing thechances of making Type 1 errors—that is, in this case, claiming a relationshipbetween internships/co-ops and learning when there is none.Interview data were analyzed using a three-stage constant comparisonmethod described by Strauss and colleagues (Strauss, 1995; Strauss &Corbin, 1998). First, transcripts were read and re-read to generate initialcategories of information or codes that represented “an initial plot of theterrain” (Miles & Huberman
