In a2012 assessment by the Degree and Graduate Education Development Centre of the ChineseMinistry of Education, CQUPT ranked number 26 in the field of Information andCommunications Engineering among universities in the People’s Republic of China. In China, a fresh graduate with a B.S. degree in EE faces a tough and very competitive domesticjob market. Facing this reality, students and their parents have become very interested inenhanced competitiveness. They generally view an engineering degree from certain foreignsources, particularly the United States, as very prestigious and highly desirable. Quite simply, theproblem is one of cost

centers onactive-learning, problem-solving, and team work.2. IntroductionIntroduction to Mechanical Design is a required course for all sophomores. It is intended tointroduce students to all related topics in design. To this end, a solid background in engineeringgraphics is required. While the course is quite common for all engineering programs, whatmakes it special is that it has been paired with an English writing class that is centered ontechnical writing. Most engineering programs in the States have tried pairing a lab course withthe writing class. To the best knowledge of the authors, our class has never been experimentedin other institutes. Because of the newly added component, the credit for the course has beenincreased to four instead of

Students participating in Future Engineers worked in teams to assemble 3D printerkits and, in parallel, to design objects to print with that technology. In both programs, studentsenjoyed close mentorship from faculty, laboratory instructors and undergraduate engineeringstudents. Communication skills were woven throughout the projects as a STEAM element —students were asked to present, discuss and defend their work and research findings. Overall

for Engineering Education, 2017IntroductionABET’s international accreditation efforts increased tremendously over last several years. Inthe past, ABET evaluated programs outside the U.S., by institutional request, to determine ifthey were “substantially equivalent” to ABET-accredited programs. “Substantial equivalency”means that a program is comparable in program content and educational experience, but maydiffer in format or method of delivery. It implies reasonable confidence that the program hasprepared its graduates to begin professional practice at the entry level. While these evaluationsfollowed policies and procedures similar to those used for accreditation, no accreditationaction was taken, nor was there any assumption that a program

has become one of the first of the kind in Russia. Fromthe point of view of practice-oriented programs for training entrepreneur-engineers through asystem of tutorship, the educational program is unmatched throughout higher educationinstitutions in the Russian Federation. Students are the most dynamically developing part of the society and possess a highentrepreneurship potential. Nevertheless, the degree of implementation of theentrepreneurship aspect in training programs of engineers is insignificant now, more than60% of students do not have courses of business training in their syllabi, educationalinstitutions do not always find them necessary. As a result, graduates do not have sufficientskills and knowledge regarding how to start

The use of each space is unique to eachinstitution, with spaces typically supporting curricular, extra-curricular, personal, andentrepreneurial projects. It is noted that engineering programs have always included elements of higher educationmakerspaces in their programs but these elements were often regarded as individual parts ratherthan as a collective whole. For example, machine shops were (and many still are) viewed asindependent operations that service courses and research endeavors. Similarly, undergraduateteaching labs, such as those that might support a mechatronics course, were (and sometimes stillare) treated as single-purpose resources for experiments and projects related to that course.Makerspaces are
