students through multiple channels. This relationship is importantand ongoing, not only contributing to creating an inclusive campus, but also elevating theperception of the Library beyond traditional stereotypes.Case Study 3: Foundational Entrepreneurship InstructionEntrepreneurship programming at the University of Waterloo happens at both the curricular andco-curricular levels. One long-standing collaborator has been the campus incubator, Velocity, which attracts many students from the Faculty of Engineering. Each semester, theEntrepreneurship Librarian provided a standalone research workshop, encouraging students toresearch their innovative ideas deeply before jumping to provide solutions. While this workshopwas always well-attended, the impact

frequently than “force.” Despite their ubiquity in engineering practice, the concepts of “tolerance” and “safety factor” are considerably under-emphasized inengineering textbooks.Accessing course reserve lists was considerably more difficult for some institutions. Institutionsthat made this easy simply provided a spreadsheet with textbook (title, authors, ISBN) andcourse information (course code, department code). Institutions that made this difficult providedno consolidated list, and only allowed access to reserve lists through individual queries. Librarystaff interested in promoting this kind of research—particularly for internal curriculumdevelopment efforts—can provide reserve list information in a consolidated form, such as aspreadsheet. results of the collaboration showed that having a sustained series ofinformation literacy instruction over the term increased students’ proficiency in research [1]. Thefaculty and librarian felt that the first-year engineering students needed to move beyond the goalof just improving their information literacy skills and move to where students should learn moreabout the research process, more specifically, how research is conducted in their chosenengineering field. It was decided to embed the librarian within the curricular unit, whichconsisted of five instruction sessions culminating in a literature review based on researchconducted by faculty members in the College of Engineering.ObjectivesThe objective of the research was to evaluate the impact

Resources such as those outlined above allow the library to play a role in recruiting new students to the university.Based on this, and other collaborative discussions, the deans assembled a collective visionfor academic affairs at the university that involves working with the following constituencygroups in new ways: Outreach to pre-K through high school students – the colleges aim to collaborate together and with the university extension offices (located in every

Though not ideal, we recorded modules one through four using Zoom. The campus studios were up and running for module five, and the audio and video quality arenoticeably better. As a cost-share for the grant, the Purdue University Libraries provided an instructional designerto assist with video editing, graphic design, and accessibility. The designer created graphics andanimations that helped convey the information in the modules in an interesting and attractivemanner. Additionally, the designer created and embedded captions in all videos to help withaccessibility. The modules were rolled out as they were developed over the course of the Fall 2022 semester inan undergraduate business class and two undergraduate engineering technology classes

Kearns,Kirsch, and Cononie created a game delivered through their institution’s course managementsystem to make information literacy more interactive [18]. . Byunderstanding these factors, CTA can help us design more effective and efficient learningexperiences, tools, training programs, and work environments. If we can understand thepsychology of a task through observing how people think and act in real-world situations, we candevise more effective solutions for the real problem [18]. In this study, we use CTA to explore STEM students’ real-world pain points with search.Fourteen undergraduate students from the College of Engineering and the College of Sciencesand Arts completed several library searches during one library instruction session. We used aself-report method for knowledge elicitation and data collection. Our Institutional Review Board(IRB) confirmed that an IRB review was not needed since we

course-required student interactions.Evaluate - The designer assesses the objectives that they identified during the analysis phase. • Value - When considering value, the designer uses multiple methods to assess the efficacy of their teaching. This can be difficult with one shot instruction, but this feedback can be insightful in designing future instruction. • Evolution - The designer can look beyond student assessments and consider their own reflections as they seek to improve the course. Writing a short reflection after you teach, especially if you try something new, may be valuable in helping you to reflect and improve.Three Examples of INCLUSIVE ADDIE in Information Literacy Instruction in the

GL often contains unique information not found in otherpublished sources. This information can be incredibly detailed and extensive, and not beholdento space constraints imposed by traditional scholarly publishing. Relatedly, informationdisseminated in GL formats may be published on an accelerated timeline relative to scholarlyworks, for which the peer review process can take quite a bit of time. In the case of

Education, 2023The Teaching Needs of Engineering Faculty Compared to Business Faculty: How the Library and Librarian Fit InAbstractSubject or liaison librarians are frequently asked to provide information literacy instruction intheir assigned departments. However, not much in the literature explores how else librarians cansupport faculty teaching needs beyond information literacy. This paper compares the results oftwo separate studies conducted by the author that examined the teaching needs of faculty frombusiness and engineering. Business faculty were interviewed as part of a multi-site study in 2018led by Ithaka S+R, while the engineering faculty study was done separately by the author in2020. Interview transcripts from both

, or observational studies.Centering users in research is not new for libraries or engineering librarians, who have beenstriving to better understand their users for decades. This literature review highlights severalvariations of survey, interview, and focus group methodologies. Most focus on specificsubgroups of engineering students, such as members of the LGBTQIA+ community [2] orEnglish language learners [3]. Even without the confines of a degree program, finding arepresentative sample or moving beyond convenience sampling is difficult, so one unifyingtheme is small sample sizes. When examining user centered research in engineering libraries, there are numerousexamples of small studies focusing on students belonging to specific

This most often is done by using the PROXIMITY commands as WITH, NEAR, or PRE that specify that the words to the left and right must be within so many words of each other. Software allowing such proximity flexibility is to be a desired feature of the programming.Designing nomenclature and classifications systems for Tribal Archives and Collections toaccommodate both Indigenous Culture and the related dominant culture material is aschallenging as using the dominant culture’s existing databases. The lessons learned through thissearching exercise points to possibilities for

difference being that the listdeveloped in class provides more explicit details. From this exercise, considerations aroundreproducibility were gradually introduced, starting with a new question: “How will you preserveyour progress along each step of the scientific method?” As a class, simple approaches werenoted. For research design and planning steps such as initial observations, research questions andhypotheses, here is an overall summary of the concepts noted: ● Write down ideas in digital documents such as Google Docs, where collaborators can share this information through email, social media, or other online locations, with varying permissions for viewing or editing. ● Write down ideas on physical paper to quickly draw visual

These choices are often protected by academic freedompolicies [3].In particular, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical sciences (STEM)courses may rely heavily on IM, such as textbooks, to augment lecture and laboratory learningactivities and lectures. Textbooks are often content-rich and may have substantial onlineresources to assist learners and support instruction [2]. However, there are a myriad of additionalinformation resources available to supplement or replace textbooks, and these might bepurchased by students, provided by faculty (e.g. course reserves), provided through universityand college libraries, or be Open Access or Open Educational Resources (OER) that

After the war, however, the engineering librarian communities in ACRL and ASEE grewquickly, offering new opportunities for professional development, networking, informationsharing, research, and advocacy. This paper seeks a deeper understanding of the academic engineering librarian community in the1940s and early 1950s through the analysis of data compiled from the Directory of CollegeEngineering Library Personnel [2], published in 1949 by the Engineering School LibrariesSection of ACRL and supplemented by data from other sources such as Who’s Who in LibraryService [3].
