how capable such tools arewithin certain disciplines. This work in progress aims to shift from evaluating generative AItools’ capabilities to exploring how such tools impact the information-seeking behaviors of theirusers. The paper focuses on the impact of OpenAI’s ChatGPT on the information-seekingbehavior of engineering students. The paper presents data from a survey of engineering students. In addition, the paper provides the methodology and preliminary data from a structured interviewwhere participants will use ChatGPT to address a multifaceted problem concerning the GrandChallenges for Engineering.IntroductionNear the end of 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool.ChatGPT is a large language model

an attempt to create a higher-impact instructionsession for transfer students. In total, twenty-four sections have received library instruction withthe new Nearpod lesson format. We feel it has been a successful endeavor, with active learningand an interactive instruction platform helping with engagement in the one-shot classroom. As mentioned, moving forward, we aim to assess library impact more concretely, using ourlearning management system to distribute pre- and post-test surveys to students to gain a fullerawareness of the effect that our library session has on these students. We aim to assess the keytakeaways from the lesson, such as using the Everything Search, getting citations from itemrecords, and the resources and services

similar explorations at other small, private colleges.Introduction & MethodsThough the impact of textbook costs has been investigated by various institutions andorganizations, most research has taken place within community colleges and public universities.Very few studies from small, private colleges have been published [1], [2], [3], and none of theseare from similar universities. While our search did reveal several papers on engineeringtextbooks and open textbooks, none focused on the cost of textbooks for engineering students. While this paper examines the cost of textbooks from the perspective of engineering students, itdoes not focus solely on engineering textbooks. In the fall of 2022, the Dartmouth Library and the Thayer School of

changed, adapting to new technologiesand curricula. A global pandemic had upended familiar classroom structures and studentexpectations. The library viewed any engagement with the SoE as a “fresh start” in terms of theirrelationship but wanted to make the engagement as meaningful as possible. To do that, thelibrary needed to re-build our understanding of the SoE, students’ lived experiences, whatstudents considered research, how they learned best, and what they viewed as challenges to theirprocess. We needed to listen first. We describe this user centered approach as a “Listening First” strategy, since ourresearch relied on broad, open-ended questions as opposed to surveys with predeterminedanswers or scales. The primary goal for the

, the role of the Mitchell MemorialLibrary will become even more important to the university community, including nearly 23,000students and 1,500 faculty members. This work will specifically focus on the process behindformulating a strategic plan at a land grant university and how it created institutionalopportunities for the Bagley College of Engineering to support strategic goals on improving thestate, regional and national economy. To work in line with this mission, the College ofEngineering set a goal to expand experiential learning opportunities for its students. As part ofthis, the engineering dean discussed collaborations with all the other academic deans, fromwhich they were able to identify several key opportunities to explore and

of an ideal libraryspace [3]. Students see their academic library as a multi-purpose destination. They use the libraryfor both individual and group study, reference services, computer use, and meeting andsocializing [4,5].Engineering students are somewhat unique compared to students in other disciplines. They tendto search for information themselves rather than ask a librarian for assistance [6]. Engineeringstudents participate in both individual and group study on a regular basis but they also engage inmore individual study than non-STEM majors [7].Academic libraries use space studies to understand how their spaces are used by students [8]. Fora library renovation at Ohio Northern University, the library conducted a survey and used

academia. On-the-jobinformation needs move at a more rapid pace and employers provide less specific guidance thanacademic instructors, making it difficult for new university graduates to solve informationproblems [1]. For engineering and technology students, workplace information use involves lessof the sources that are traditionally emphasized in academia (e.g., peer reviewed journal articles, books) and more of the resources heavily relied upon in industry, such as technical standards [2],[3], [4], [5]. Additionally, workplace projects require a high degree of interpersonal informationgathering and communication with colleagues [6], [7].Recent research from American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) indicatesthat employers view

. Designedby the Center for Special Applied Technology (CAST), UDL’s framework for inclusiveinstruction is based on the incorporation of three principles: presenting students with multiplemeans of engagement (what they call the “why” of learning), multiple means of representation(the “what” of learning), and multiple means of action and expression (the “how” of learning). One of the most popular and arguably powerful ways to make instruction accessible, UDLprinciples and strategies require considerable effort for instructors to learn and implement intheir teaching. In their article “One Step at a Time: A Case Study of Incorporating UniversalDesign for Learning in Library Instruction,” Samantha H. Peter and Kristina A. Clement discussthe challenges of

DVS are a tool that students can use to acknowledge theimportance of diverse citation practice and the process they have undertaken to engage in it.Incorporating DVS into their final published work is a way for students to show what they havebeen able to achieve, the considerations they have made, process undertaken, as well asacknowledgment of areas for improvement in the future.Current GapsThere are several gaps that currently make this undertaking more difficult. One is the scope ofdiverse author lists. Current lists are either broad in coverage, relatively small or both. This canmake diversifying one’s research on any specific research topic difficult through existing listsalone, especially outside of the broader introductory and

complexity of the name, a large challenge is present in the lack of technicalstandards education research and engagement despite the known strategic value to society andindustry [2]. In some companies, technical standards education and engagement are shunned. Inothers, it is seen as a political process with an indeterminate outcome [3]. Therefore, employeesare discouraged from participating in the technical standards development process or are requiredto sacrifice their personal time to volunteer for such efforts [2]. This deterrence fromparticipation in the standards development and standardization process creates additionaleducational challenges for professionals and students

Textbook selection practices, particularly OER adoption, have been studied for STEM courses, including engineeringmechanics [7] and health sciences [4]. Other OER-related research includes the positive effectson student learning outcomes [1], efforts to design OER [8], how OER could be better curated inrepositories [9], and detailed case studies [10].For some STEM instructors, there is tension between faculty

It should be noted that while the course enrollment consisted ofundergraduates, individual skill sets and experiences were varied, and that had an impact on theircomfort with information engagement and use. For example, two students in the class were in theprocess of applying to graduate school, and therefore, had more experience with scholarlyjournal literature. As stated above, there were several business research needs addressed in the course, however, wewill only detail one aspect here, which was to help the students identify and define a targetconsumer. It was important for them to do this because they needed to ensure their design wassomething people would eventually buy

This sentiment complimented the strong sense of public service, especially among those working in public institutions, who view sharing knowledge as part of their duty. • Alignment with Goals: Authoring OER is closely aligned with educators’ academic professional responsibilities regarding content delivery in their courses and contributing to their field
