for students toattain and succeed in academic positions are clear: independence, impact, full participation in thescholarly community and teaching and managing collaborative work among other benefits.Study of engineering graduate student’s needs and how to effectively meet these needs is basedon a periodic survey of the entire population of over 1,000 Ph.D. students across nine fields ofengineering at a major U.S. university. The latest survey was carried out in November 2022 andindicates broadly that students consider their academic writing skills to be weak in a number ofareas and are most likely to take advantage of elective writing and speaking courses if they areencouraged by their advisor or hear from friends that their experiences with

Nevertheless, for GTAs to implement effective teaching practices

As such, we held a focus groupto understand their perceptions of the following:Overall experience with active learning: What expectations do students have surrounding activelearning in graduate courses? What factors impact whether students are willing to engage inactive learning?Sense of community: What strategies employed in the course did students feel contributed to asense of trust and community? Do students feel that having a sense of community within theclass is important for active learning to take place?GSRSs: Did the use of GSRSs at the beginning of the class period increase students’ likelihoodof speaking up later on in class? Did these exercises help students to feel more confident

Fellows during the 2018-19 academic year, it became clear that themost effective projects were ones that matched the interests and goals of the individual Fellows. The Professional Development Fellow, for example, was deeply committed to expanding accessto information and resources for their peers. This led the Fellow to reach out to prospectivespeakers not just on our campus, but from our community of alums and industry partners. TheFellow’s passion for engaging their graduate community meant that they developed a calendar of“Lunch & Learn” seminars that were well-attuned to students’ interests and robustly attended(we had overflow audiences almost every week, which was a first for this series). For the second cohort of Fellows, recruited for

the seminar course feltstrongly about its shortcomings in helping them to build community, learn about the research anddissertation process, and provide mentorship. In contrast, the students who enrolled in the pilotversion of the STEM Ed seminar course reflected positively on their experience. Many of thegoals set forth for the class were achieved specifically in the areas of community engagement, collaboration, and navigating the graduate school process. While the STEM Ed version of thecourse has only been implemented for one academic year, the positive responses are promisingand encourage the faculty members to continue offering it. Continued improvements andadditional topics will be included in future versions of the course. Specifically a

These cohorts engaged for 8 to10 weeks and were facilitated by faculty or professionals with advanced degrees and were keptsmall (3-5 students per group) to allow for the development of meaningful relationships betweenmentors and mentees. The groups were created and matched to a mentor based on topic preference, time zone, andavailability for meetings. Each group focused on a different topic. These topics were offered as aguideline for group discussions, but often added other topics based on the specific needs andchallenges of mentees. The topics have evolved over each cohort iteration. New topics have beenadded based on the recommendations of participants. The program included training for mentors, a kick-off meeting, a mid-program check

These negotiations can help their sense of belonging within aninterdisciplinary professional community [14][15]. learning, and independence in research activities. While in many respects the twolaboratories are similar, the presence and role of a leader-mentor in daily activitiesis what set them apart. In this report, we analyze the impact of leadership-mentorship on learning and professional formation. We argue that the degree towhich a leader-mentor is consistently active in the laboratory’s life presentsadvantages and disadvantages with respect to different aspects of learning andprofessional formation. On one hand, professional development of students maybe hindered by the absence of direct oversight from an in-laboratory professionalmentor, resulting in delayed graduation for example. On another, absence ofdirect oversight can compel students to

This paper also discusses the structure of these courses, examining their unique pedagogical approaches, objectives, and delivery methods. Subsequently, the paper explores the purported impacts and benefits of the PD courses, drawing on studentreflections to assess their effectiveness in enhancing students' competencies. Such mentoring relationships facilitated professionaldevelopment and authentic engagement for novice faculty and helped reduce the uncomfortablefeeling of “imposter syndrome” in the new field of inquiry. A key observation of the literature summarily described shows that extant studies primarilyfocus on faculty development. Worldwide, numerous graduate programs focusing on engineeringeducation have been established, which ushers in the argument that graduate students could alsobenefit from such formal or informal communities outside their programs [3]. Emerging researchon the experiences of international graduate

According to the National Science Board(NSB) [1], they constitute a significant proportion of STEM doctoral degree holders, contributingapproximately 30% to the US STEM workforce. However, the experiences of internationalstudents, especially those of color, differ from their US national and green card counterparts, oftenencountering marginalization due to racial and ethnic biases. These negative experiences canadversely impact their success and retention in academic settings [12]. Within the broader contextof international students of color in engineering, Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly West Africa, represents one of the fastest-growing populations [15

The culture and environment of an institution can also have an impact onthe student’s well-being and success. Within higher education, there has been astigma around asking for help (Dunn, Iglewicz, and Moutier 2008; Wrench and 6Punyanunt 2004). While an institution may offer and advertise mental healthservices to assist students, many may unlikely pursue them due to feeling thatit will negatively affect their career goals and the perceptions of them by peersand faculty (Dunn, Iglewicz, and Moutier 2008

As youngBlack engineers continue to enter advanced graduate studies, it becomes important to examine thefactors that impact how they enter and ultimately decide to leave the institution. We relate our experiences chronologically starting withthe expectations from peers once arriving on campus, moving into the expectation of solving auniversity’s equity problems, and ending with the mental burdens of coping with an unhealthywork environment. According to Lomer (2017), [5] information on theoretical perspectives helps students andacademics understand how policies shape perceptions. Investigating the motivations behindrecruiting international students, and questioning those motivations, critically opens new ways ofthinking about these issues—ultimately providing valuable insights into a complex and importanttopic. They are notably subject to elevated levels of stress associatedwith research, teaching, and publishing responsibilities as well as high levels of uncertainty withregards to advisor expectations, financial security, and career prospects [2]. The excessive levelsof stress and uncertainty around graduate school has contributed to a concerning mental healthcrisis, with one study identifying PhD students as nearly twice as likely to be experiencingpsychological distress than highly educated peers in the general public [3]. In graduate studentoriented spaces, negative aspects of academic culture are readily named and critiqued, especiallythrough online communities and anonymous online message
