circuits will serve as framework for future lab-based online courses. In this paper, our summer 2010 course implementation is thoroughly described. Problemswith technology and pedagogy used in the summer 2010 implementation of online electricalcircuits are examined and possible solutions are presented. These findings, along with previousstudies in online education, were used to develop a pedagogical framework for an online lab-based course. Plans for the summer 2011 online course and proposed pedagogical frameworkwill be introduced. 2. Recently Eyler and Giles (1999) conducted a study of 1500 students from 20colleges/universities about the effect of service-learning. They found service-learning impactedpositively on tolerance, personal development, interpersonal development, community, andcollege connections. Students reported working harder, being more curious, connecting learningto personal experience, and demonstrated deeper understanding of subject matter. Service-learning is being integrated into some engineering courses, e.g., Purdue's EPICS program inElectrical Engineering (http://epics.ecn.purdue.edu/root.asp) has several

Many engineering programs face the challenge ofrecruiting and retaining a diverse student body [25], [34], [35]. Also, the engineering curriculumis a hands-on and practical curriculum that leaves faculty with even less time and resources foradvising. When considering these components, advocates for professional academic advisors highlight thatacademic advisors are not divided among teaching, research, and service commitments. Dedicatedacademic-career advisors are generally hired and trained to address the

Other barriersto use of these technologies may include lack of knowledge in website design and development.Additionally, instructor response to questions posted on online course bulletin boards or EMAIL(i.e. text-based, “virtual” office hours) are inefficient, time-consuming avenues forcommunication with students and lack real-time interaction between parties. The goal of this project was to investigate the feasibility of theinexpensive construction, and use of a BAN. A BAN, consisting of two nodes and a base stationwas successfully built and tested using open source and inexpensive hardware to measure pulserate, body temperature, and patient’s location. Each node consisted of a pulse sensor, atemperature sensor, a GPS module and a ZigBee wireless modem packaged together. The nodeswere designed to incorporate other sensors, such as an accelerometer, in the future. The basestation consisted of a receiving ZigBee modem and a Wi-Fi

recommendation would be to convert some of the engineering lab modules tointeractive online simulations or virtual lab setups to re-introduce some of the “hands-on”experience that was lost in the rapid transition to online labs. The need or usefulness of a virtuallab or simulation was stated by both GLAs and undergraduates as a way to improve theirsatisfaction with the lab courses, but a clear path to developing and maintaining those resourceswas not defined. Therein appears to lie a major drawback in the current available resources tomechanical engineering labs; when executed correctly, virtual labs have the potential to offersimilar learning gains, but they are difficult to program and maintain without substantialfinancial, technical, and professional
