In this exercise the students are studying the transient heat transfer from theheated oven to the aluminum rod. The length and the slimness of the rod make it very difficult toimbed a thermocouple into the part. A novel approach to determining part temperature wasdeveloped building on the coefficient of thermal expansion experiment that they had donebefore. The temperature of the rod is indirectly determined using expansion data.The oven is first pre-heated to an elevated temperature, which becomes the ambient temperaturefor the test.
