GIFTS: Global Classroom Project: Bringing global competency to the STEM classroomThe Global Classroom Project aims to develop global awareness in undergraduate students atPenn State University. The goal is to bring together first-year domestic and international studentsto enhance classroom learning and engage with the concepts of student integration and globalcompetency. Actively integrating international and domestic students not only fulfills thepurpose of enriching their academic experience, we find that it also increases global competencyand awareness. The first-year seminar courses serve as a platform for STEM students’ academicand social integration and are often designed to prepare students for

GIFTS: Going Circular – Reusing a First-Year Design ProjectWe developed a first-year multidisciplinary design project, which compels students to think interms of circular economies. This project focused on introducing students to the design processand project management. We structured the project for teams of 4 or 5 first-year students, requiring 40-50 hours per student throughout the semester. The students are required to keeptheir vehicle battery charged with use of a photovoltaic module. The competition goalprominently features a measure of the reusability of components. The project requires technical work in mechanics, electronics, and programming in a context ofsystem design and sustainability. Most students find at least one

Prototyping a prototype-based project with minimal equipment requirementsAbstract: This full paper describes the design, implementation, and reception of a prototype-baseddesign project for first-year engineering students in an introductory course. This project wasintroduced in a course that previously lacked authentic physical design due to the limited accessto prototyping equipment. Prior student projects were confined to design and computer modelingand simulation elements only, with hands-on activities restricted to measurement-based labs. Thenew project incorporated concept development by the students along with physical prototyping oftheir design using and a combination of reusable components and disposable inexpensive supplies. The

Work in Progress: Inspiring and Engaging First-Year Engineering Students at a Small Campus Through International Team Design ProjectsAbstractThis work-in-progress, innovative practice paper summarizes our first-year Introduction toEngineering Design course at a small campus, and our continuing efforts to improve studentengagement, inspiration, and retention in engineering. The paper emphasizes the two majordesign projects used to teach the engineering design process. For the past thirteen years, one ofthese long-term design projects has been completed in collaboration with several internationaluniversities. The design teams have combined engineering students from diverse cultures

A WORK-IN-PROGRESS: We ARe…DUINO! a project-based first-year experience, collaborative with the IEEE student chapterIn this work-in-progress (WIP) paper, we will invite discussion about our recent and ongoingefforts in developing a first-year experience for Electrical Engineering (EE). A common desireof undergraduates in EE (and we suspect across engineering in general) is for more “hands-on”experiences. What little they get tends to be later in their college career; however, as the Do-It-Yourself (DIY)/Make culture continues to grow, more of our students are walking in the doorready and willing to “get their hands dirty” on

ExperiencesAuthenticity [1] is a goal for many instructors when developing design experiences for first yearengineering students. Some of the perception of authenticity comes through the clients, eitherreal or imagined, with real clients having an understandable advantage in this perception. For thisreason, many institutions pull in industry partners looking to solve real world problems. However, for smaller classes of first year students, it can be difficult to draw in industry partners. In such cases, instructors may instead look to service learning opportunities [2], partnering withlocal community members as clients. In this paper, the author discusses one such partnership andtakes a five-year retrospective look at the projects and the process used from the

In the fall semester students build, test, and present at an exposition an Arduino-basedgame. While students are provided the design for the game, they are strongly encouraged tomake creative modifications. Following this, students complete a reverse engineering activity ona simple household appliance or medical device. The result is a CAD model of the device and adetailed report, typically of about 40 – 50 pages. Students work in teams of three or four on bothprojects. In the spring semester work consists of a

Two of the professors are using a lecture and lab based instructional model, wherestudents attend two, 75-minute lectures each week and learn about computational concepts usingMATLAB. Students then practice these concepts during one 75-minute lab section each weekrun by a teaching assistant (TA), and they also complete weekly homework assignments usingMATLAB. The course culminates in a final project of students’ own choosing to demonstratetheir knowledge of both MATLAB as a tool and computational thinking concepts moregenerally. Each of these
