As a result, learning by doing,especially in a group, is broadly recommended by the literature [e.g., 6, 26, 79]. In a similar vein, Stringer and McFarland [16] used Mumford’s Model ofLeadership Characteristics [44] to understand the success of a Capstone project when a veteranwas placed in a leadership position. escape rooms have teams solve a problem using puzzles, clues, and hints ina limited amount of time. Two escape rooms were developed for seniors in our environmentalengineering program. The first escape room was centered on a hazardous waste incinerationproblem that included, the Ideal Gas Law, gaussian dispersion, and risk assessment. This escaperoom was used in our Solid and Hazardous Waste course to help our seniors prepare for theFundamentals of Engineering Exam. It was also piloted with two faculty teams during a summerteaching seminar. The second escape room was built around an engineering ethics case study inour capstone design course, which will be discussed in the companion paper. Participation was less than 100% because some students were allowed to use prior work experience to earn theirinternship credit or substitute the internship with a capstone project. Internship participation has risen from 84% ofgraduates in 2015 to 96% in 2019.12 At MECC, the internship was not offered for credit (either as an elective or required) in the Electrical and CNCEngineering Technology programs.The challenges surrounding finding an internship were reflected in the MWCC InternshipSurvey. . Although students worked in groups, they were required to hand in individual solutions, which were another component of each student’s professionalism grade. The TAs graded one capstone problem each week and gave limited written feedback. • Exit Quiz + debrief (50 mins/week). Every Friday, following the Problem Set, the students took a zero-stakes Exit Quiz on the material for the week. Although not a component of their grade, the Exit Quiz was designed to closely emulate an exam question. Following the quiz, the instructor went over the solution in class, and provided a detailed rubric for the students to grade themselves. • Exam Feedback (2 times per quarter). Summative assessment of the students was accomplished the same way as
