supplement to traditional lectures. This paper introduces such advanced powersystem visualization techniques as animation, 3-D display, contouring of power flows and mapdata projections. Those techniques were applied in the power system course (ELEG 3163) of theelectrical engineering department at Arkansas Tech University. Students’ outcomes andevaluation of this class supported the learning effectiveness of this course.IntroductionTraditionally calculations for in-class power system analysis have been done by hand, engineering calculators and/or text-based programming software. Since late 1990s, severalteaching approaches for power system analysis using power system simulation software havebeen developed and some simulators have been utilized in new

collaborate in an international environment, there is a clear need to expandand develop international programs that address the unique needs of engineering and physicsstudents. Historically, these students have had fewer international opportunities that allow themto pursue coursework or research abroad that is directly tied to their degree program. TheNanoJapan program, discussed in depth in this paper, is an innovative response designed toaddress this need by attracting undergraduate students to the emerging areas of electricalengineering and the physical sciences, especially the study of nanotechnology. By involving andtraining students in cutting-edge research projects in THz nanoscale science and engineering, thisprogram aims to increase the

to the rigorous course requirements of the engineeringprogram, it is often difficult for students to spend a semester abroad and stay on track with theiracademic timeline. The recent change to Harvard’s academic calendar to create a Wintersessionterm in January opened the door to a new range of possibilities. Many faculty members in theEnvironmental Sciences & Engineering program at SEAS had on-going research projects withBrazilian collaborators, and the timing match of summer break in South America was anattractive fit. Poli-USP was an excellent match for a partner institution because it is the largestand most prestigious engineering school in Brazil. An additional benefit of the location was thatDRCLAS had recently opened their Brazil

structured differently in both content and pedagogy, and each contains a setof course-specific learning objectives. However, both also share our University's set of GlobalCompetency Outcomes (GCOs).The Argentina program is an interdisciplinary project-based class. Students work in teams onprojects at wineries in Mendoza, Argentina. Students from all disciplines are invited to apply, with engineering and undergraduate business students being the two largest groups. Most “classtime” is spent either at the client sites or working within their project team. Faculty take the roleof mentors and coaches, advising students as they progress through their projects. The projectsare diverse, including manufacturing operations, sales, logistics, and tourism. Most

Global Engineering Competencies and CasesWhether working on multi-national project teams, navigating geographically dispersed supplychains, or engaging customers and clients abroad, engineering graduates encounter worlds ofprofessional practice that are increasingly global in character. This new reality poses challengesfor engineering educators and employers, who are faced with the formidable task of preparingengineers to be more effective in diverse global contexts. In response, more global learningopportunities are being made available to engineering students, as reflected in gradual yet steadyincreases in the number of global engineering programs and participating students.1 Manycompanies are also offering professional development

. Another example that gave students an opportunity to examine opposite sides ofone particular engineering project occurred on our way to visit the Three Gorge Dam. Studentshad heard mostly negative stories about the impact of the dam project on the lives of theresidents in the area, although the students were aware of the benefit the dam is having on powergeneration and green energy. However when actually visiting the dam, the tour guide told acompletely different story. The tour guide said people of his age in the area were very happywith the project because the dam project stimulated the local economy by bringing in many jobsthat were unthinkable before the project. While both sides are correct from their ownperspectives, the sharply contrasting

This scenario presents many new challenges forengineering organizations in that one project for new autonomous gold mine may start withpreliminary design in London (UK) with German-trained engineers, then developed furtherwith detailed design in Houston (Texas) with a mix of US and Brazilian-trained engineers, and followed by design validation and verification in Singapore with a mix of British andAsian-trained engineers, and project managed by Australasian-trained engineers during theconstruction phases in Laos, all within

market.Nonconformance of the labor force, the educational level of professionals and quickly evolvingbusiness requirements represent 3 aspects that have hindered this evolution. There has been along-felt need to modernize the professional education system, particularly because Russia, aswell as many other countries, lacks skilled engineers. One potential solution to help solve thisproblem is to develop new approaches to engineering education. The Socio-Economic Development Plan of the Russian Federation which enunciates the goals ofthe educational system to the year 2020 includes establishing world-class research and educationcenters that integrate advanced research and educational programs to staff and develop nationalinnovation projects. demonstratedthe potential for accelerating experience by using live simulations of realistic, complex, systemdesign projects. Engineers at different levels of experience, who have been immersed in thesesimulations, have demonstrated insights usually associated with time on the job. This raises thepossibility that useful experience might be acquired at dramatically reduced time, cost and risk.We have designed and conducted multiple simulations to expose students to the complexity, confusion, and decision-making and leadership challenges encountered in complex system designand development projects. These interrelated simulations have included: Design Simulations,Leadership Simulations, Customer Simulations, and Peer Review Simulations. The simulations

The main purpose was to re-design the DE course, implemented in ourinstitution. It was a collegiate work of the faculty members of the Academy of DifferentailEquations. The early findings demonstrated that there were several educational proposals claiming theurgent need to reformulate the way DE was taught. They also emphasized the DE object as a toolto model various phenomena. 21,23,28 We also observed a varied use of technology such as OpenEducational Ressources (OER) and specialized software such as Mathematica and Maple toteach certain topics in DE. As a result and with the active participation of the faculty

technology is now measured in month and weeks. - Furthermore the focus of the engineering disciplines is shifting from pure technical subjects to subjects directed to Information Technologies and the daily life of mankind. - Engineering issues, either in industrial products or in engineering projects, are quickly Page 21.30.3 becoming increasingly complicated and most of these issues cross disciplinary lines. - The size of the systems developed or designed by engineers grows continually. A good example for this is the concept of the “Smart City”, which includes two assets – the social and the environmental capital
