Both assignments required students to use their imaginations tovisualize and construct a physical model. Although both assignments are designed to promotecreative problem-solving, the author used these assignments to illustrate how civility componentscan also be incorporated into them.The Mandala Presentations occurred in Week 9 and the Semester Project Presentations occurredin Week 13 of the semester. During the first 9 weeks of the semester, students learned aboutvisualization, mental barriers to creativity and the phases of the creative problem-solvingprocess. The Mandala and Project assignments provided an

The spiralsequence of courses also included projects that were designed to require synthesis of thesevarious topics. The assessment showed improved retention as a benefit of the spiralcurriculum compared to the

Originating as a final project from theEngineering Experimentation course at The Cooper Union, the student-designed andmanufactured torsional test-stand has become a permanent fixture in the Automotive Lab.
