translational aspects of fundamentalneuroscience towards applied neurodegenerative and neurological neuropsychiatric strategies.Program ModelStudy abroad courses that are faculty led and short term are seen as the major vehicles forstudents to integrate an international experience in their curriculum. The opposite is true for theNYC LSAMP model, which has a term length of 8 weeks or more typically in the summer. Asummary of the program elements at each university site is shown in Table 1. The eleven coreelements of the program were deemed an integral component of the success. For example, thefaculty led designation for the KTH program is linked to the career award of the faculty. TU-Graz/Univ. Graz program is also faculty led, but is based in CUNY at

education and accreditation 3. A shift to emphasizing engineering design 4. A shift to applying education, learning and social-behavioral sciences research 5. A shift to integrating information, computational, and communications technology in educationIn the 50’s, industry demands for engineers required a change in the process of training andeducation of engineers. Engineering curricula and other phases of college programs were modifiedto provide an alignment between colleges and industry [4]. This evolution of the discipline movedacademic institutions to have a more dynamic and adaptive curriculum. During the last twodecades, technology has been one of the most important supports for engineering development, requiring engineers from many

finished their graduate work abroad and have returned toserve their home institutions as young faculty, began to assert their presence andassume their role as a new addition to the faculty. Cultural issues, and conflictingviews on how to move forward without adversely affecting earlier gains, characterized stage two. Stage three: the stage of pondering and deliberations, which has lingered on for a long time, is characterized by calls from industries, engineering graduates, and invited experts, for more rounded engineers with the skillsand abilities to function in a modern business climate. Unfortunately, the response tothese calls has been slow. The “piece meal” approach and/or periodic adjustments toan already over-burdened curriculum, in an

Curriculum (CxC) program has found that byincluding communication assignments as part of traditional engineering assignments, thetraditional content was not sacrificed by the inclusion of communication assignments, but wasenhanced and facilitated learning at higher levels on Bloom’s taxonomy.5 In the Humanities, ithas long been suggested that a diversity of discourse leads to innovative thinking.6,7 At ourinstitution, we decided that the Encounter Engineering in Europe (E3) program was an excellentplace to include assignments designed to promote creativity, such as open-form essay writing, video creation, and multi-modal travel blogging, as a complement to more traditionalassignments, such as argumentative papers and researched reports, all of which

strategies in particular. It is a follow up to previous work by the author,on viable strategies to improve the classroom environment of engineering colleges in theArab Gulf Region. At the start, the paper provides an overview of relevant benchmarks ofengineering education in the Region. Then, relates author’s preliminary findings onteaching/learning practices in engineering colleges of the Region, sheds light on the pros andcons of the lecture format, and examines the literature on meanings and substance ofdifferent active learning protocols, focusing on cooperative engagement strategies. Thepaper, also, sheds light on: theoretical roots, research support, current practices, andsuggestions for redesigning classes, if need be, to stimulate

the ABET innovation which achieved the transformation ofaccreditation paradigm. It provided an opportunity for ABET to put forward the newaccreditation criteria-EC2000, which brought a profound impact on engineering educationwithin colleges and universities. In order to cope with the transformation paradigm ofprogram accreditation, colleges and universities carried out various engineering educationreform which included the exploration of a variety of learning outcomes assessment methods, the engagement of a wide range of intellectual resources, the internalization of the philosophyof continuous quality improvement, the integration of evaluation management mechanism, the in-depth reform of curriculum and teaching.4.1.3. model for other institutions seeking to assess students’ global and contextual competencies.Overview of the Program and Suite of AssessmentsThe program in which this suite of assessments was used provides first-year students with anopportunity to expand their global competencies through direct experience. It integrates an on-campus, Spring course meeting a general education requirement with a short-term internationalmodule immediately following semester exams in May. The 2016 program enrolled 92 studentswho participated in one of three international modules: Italy, Switzerland, and Germany; China;or the Dominican Republic. Engaging in the program provides students with opportunities toexpand their global competencies while learning about

eligible for an EngineeringPathways Fellowship. To retain the Fellowship from year to year, students had to have high academic standards, actively participate in program, and make clear progress towards a degree in engineering.Students were required to maintain a college average GPA of ≥2.7, and complete courses fortheir major consistent with the standard curriculum. Students who failed to meet these criteriawould be given an additional semester of aid on a provisional basis. In these cases, intensivecounseling would be provided. Active participation in program events was critical to generalsuccess of the program. In cases where students did not actively participate in at least 75% ofscheduled activities, they were counseled that they were
