The Triple E Initiative consisted of two components: four in personclassroom teaching days and an external field trip to CU Boulder’s campus for a science fair. Bothcomponents were designed to complement each other with the teaching days occurring first sothat middle school students could develop a relationship with CU Boulder students before thescience fair. The program was funded by a CU Boulder Mechanical Engineering diversity, equity, andinclusion (DEI) grant with the goal to specifically impact students from underrepresented groupsin STEM. When the work my students prepare is on par with that of practicing engineers, I considerthis the best metric possible. Yes, some do sub-par work, but that’s life in school. How else do I know? My students tell me in their reflections, and in written reviews. This feedbackcomes from the fall of 2022, which a student submitted to the UVU’s Office of Teaching andLearning.“Paul understands that lecturing the entire class is not effective. In earlier work (Maher et al., 2022), weacknowledged the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our S-STEM project. A furthercomplication is that the pandemic spurred an internal UMKC restructuring in which the civil andmechanical engineering programs were reassigned to different departments. Finally, projectpersonnel have changed over time.We believe the above factors have significantly impacted our S-STEM project. However, wealso believe they do not fully explain our team’s combined sense that our MCC-UMKC civil andmechanical engineering transfer
