context.Achievement of SAChE OutcomesThe next component of the survey asked participants to rate on a Likert scale whether they feltthat their institution’s UO laboratory achieved the eight SAChE outcomes and whether theirinstitution’s general chemical engineering curriculum achieved the same outcomes. Averagedresults are shown in Table 2. Although many outcomes show a large standard deviation inachievement across institutions, some trends are apparent. For example, the best-achieved(lowest-scoring) outcome both in the UO laboratory and across the curriculum is Outcome 2(characterization of the hazards associated with chemicals and other agents). Engineers Indigo: A World of Blues A Chemical Engineering Course For Nonengineers Dip white fabric in the muddy-colored indigo dye vat, and the cloth emerges green, then slowly turns azure, cobalt or sapphire before your eyes. The chemistry behind this reaction will be revealed – and practiced – in this course. This mysterious dye has an intriguing history, and we will study its societal and environmental impact from antiquity to the present. Note that we use menu-driven programs in MATLAB for students to investigate the dynamics and control of process systems, which are non-linear, have noisy measurements, and have a few controlled and manipulated variables, e.g., a distillation tower or fired heater. it was challenging for them to produce a talk. Eachindividual in the class evaluated each talk, giving written feedback to their classmates. This hadthe benefit of letting students benefit from the "best practices" of their classmates, and resulted inmuch improved subsequent presentations. At this point, the teams' productivity and performancewere quite varied; two teams had only a preliminary design, and several had working prototypes.The sharing of "intellectual property" between teams at this point was greatly appreciated, andfacilitated much improved designs. Identify theproblem, make assumptions, pursue a solution methodology and evaluate your solution.Taking these four categories leaves us with a rubric that can measure critical thinking inthe context of problem solving.
