. Completing the case study project allowed students to demonstrateproficiency in the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) Criterion 3c, 3e,and 3g, which were major objectives of the course. For the case study presented here, thestudents were required to design the construction process for an electrical substation project thathad recently been completed by the industry partner. At the completion of the case study project, the students presented their results to a panel of professionals including the course instructor, twomembers representing the industry partner, and two members representing the local electricalutility company. The industry partner also conducted job interviews for all students that wereinterested in a career with

This study utilized an online survey which was sent to 236construction firms drawn from the top 400 contractors listed in the 2008 Engineering NewsRecord (ENR) who were identified as having over 80% of their projects categorized as generalbuilding 2. The study utilized the following expanded utilization-level categorization: level 1(use of BIM technology that is limited to 2D and 3D capabilities for document production andvisualization functions), level 2 (use of BIM for additional analysis done on the 2D and 3D datathat is based on geometry and positioning of building systems including change management of2D and 3D documents, and conflict/clash detection between different

defined as the process of creating an intelligent and computable 3-D data set andsharing the data among the various types of professionals within the design and construction team.BIM technology enables the designer, engineer and builder to visualize the entire scope of abuilding project in 3-D and as well as attached schedule and cost data to the 3-D model andtherefore is ideal for being able to assist improve the collaboration among project participants.Designers and builders can plan-out, in precise detail, the location and clearances needed for acomplete and successful project. Therefore, the authors’ idea was to utilize BIM technologysoftware to enhance student-learning experience as is relates to MEP coordination.MEP Coordination Laboratory
