assignment involvesinitially summarizing a pre-determined research article on an engineering innovation, thenconducting further research into the topic to expand their knowledge of it and its implications forfuture research. We noticed that most students could summarize the initial reading, but haddifficulty articulating questions for future study. We reasoned that if students could sharpentheir ability to identify and ask questions succinctly, it would likely improve their research. Therefore, in the Spring 2019 semester, the instructors and librarians added a component thatincluded specific instruction on formulating research questions to improve students’ researchskills.Theoretical Foundations and Literature ReviewAssociation of College and

The lesson was fully implemented for fall semester 2017. Based ondata from the team’s first research project, and feedback from course faculty, the team piloted amid-semester reinforcement lesson in fall 2019. This second phase of the research project seeksto specifically reinforce students’ retention of concepts related to both the use of proper citationformatting and incorporation of more scholarly and authoritative sources in their team’s finalproject report. This work in progress paper discusses preliminary results from the fall 2019 pilot, specifically faculty perceptions of the lesson

softwaresystems that produce fair outcomes for individuals in society.Harms of Algorithm BiasThere are many reasons why an algorithm may be considered “biased.” Incomplete or faultydata is one reason. In other instances, it may be the choice of data that is being selected fordecision making. As an example of the latter, in a 2019 paper [4] in Science, “Dissecting racialbias in an algorithm used to manage the health of populations,” authors Obermeyer et al. foundevidence that a widely used commercial prediction algorithm for determining health risk wasconsistently scoring black patients as being lower risk for health issues than white patients, eventhough, in their study, the black patients had significant health risks that were being missed bythe

Consequently, the training sessions contribute to achieving theUniversity learning objectives for graduate students in research programs.IntroductionIntroductionFounded in Montreal in 1873, Polytechnique Montréal is a francophone engineering universityoffering more than 120 academic programs. In Fall 2019, the institution had 9,000 studentsenrolled, with more than 2,200 in a graduate program [1]. Polytechnique Montréal stronglyencourages diversity among its student population, so as of Fall 2019, 28% of its students werewomen and 29% were international students. Moreover, international

their collections and determine if they meet the needsof their engineering students. This paper will provide a discussion of how to use the NCEESSubject Matter Reports to evaluate engineering programs, departments, curriculums, courses, andlibrary collections. More than 40,000 engineering seniors took the FE exam in 2019. As the onlynationwide engineering exam for college seniors, the FE exam is an excellent resource forfeedback on how well students meet the outcomes prescribed by selective Accreditation Boardfor Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) accreditation criteria. The NCEES offersinstitutions free reports that break down the performance of their students on the FE exam. Thesereports, called Subject Matter Reports, are useful for
ebookversions of engineering textbooks whenever possible. Although this institution has beenfollowing this principle for the past ten years, it has done so with little direct knowledgeof students’ preferences regarding their options for print versus ebook format for theirtextbooks. Some studies have shown that students expressed a preference for using theirtextbooks in print format. To assess the usefulness of the service of providingeTextbooks, in the Fall 2019 semester the engineering librarians at the University ofMichigan developed and sent a survey to engineering graduate and undergraduatestudents whose textbooks were available as eTextbooks. The survey sought to learn aboutstudents’ use of the ebooks and their opinions about eTextbooks. As a

In oneof the few photo ethnographic studies, Thomas [18] did a photo diary study with undergraduateambassadors to investigate Rice University’s Fondren Library services and spaces. Her successwith the study informed our research project. However, there is still a gap in the literature for theuse of photography in ethnographic studies. Background of College of Architecture In fall 2019, the College Station campus had a total enrollment of 69,465: 54,476undergraduates (ungr) and 14,989 graduate students (grad) [19]. This could be for many reasons; the librarymight not own the item, the library may own a copy but it is already checked out to anotherpatron, or the assignment of a required but expensive textbook spurs high demand for aparticular title. Analysis of historical ILL request data is a useful exercise to undertake as each requestrepresents a patron with an information need which was not
