The launch video and design briefincluded information on the more than 15,000 abandoned mines in New Mexico that threatensafe access to water, how acid mine drainage occurs, a brief history on why mining wasbeneficial to the state, and how mining disasters have had and continue to have myriad negativeconsequences for people and the environment.Students were guided to conduct research on the problem and existing solutions, as well asresearching ways to engage with communities that might be mistrustful of outsiders. Most of theassessments of such first year courses have focused on students’ motivation, retention, self-efficacy, engineering identity, etc. [4-7]. and student’sacademic performance.As the SI program’s effectiveness is aimed at reducing the the D’s, F’s, W’s and Q drop rates(DFWQ%) rates in first year engineering courses and in turn retain more students to the ECEprogram, the collaborators have collected multiple types of data, including students’ SI sessionattendance and grade outcome in the course, students’ demographic data, and DFWQ% rates forattendees and non-attendees. As mentioned in the limitations section, the voluntary nature of theprogram does create some difficulty in making a direct link between higher SI attendance andstudent success. I tell them (students) that you have to think like a mathematician - practice like a basketball player. degree in one of these disciplines from any institution(67.5%, reflecting the fact that 4 students left in good standing) and from any discipline at UWM(73.0%, reflecting the fact that 4 students have already changed majors out of the targeteddisciplines, and we estimate that about 3 others will do likewise). For comparison, the overallgraduation rate derived of entering freshman in CEAS is about 30%4, and is 52.9% for thecomparison group (50.0% for those initially enrolling in Calculus I or higher, and 55.3% forthose initially enrolling in College Algebra or Trigonometry).Thus, it is clear that the CSEMS Program has a positive effect on retention and graduation, evenwhen compared with performance of students of similar profile. We suspect that
