Engagement While Learning Food Analysis by Means of a Video GameAbstractThe effects of playing the draft video game Food Analysis Simulator (FAS) by Food Engineeringstudents of Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) that attended the food analysis courseand corresponding laboratory during Fall 2010 semester were investigated. Pre-post teststudents’ results demonstrated a significant improvement in their knowledge after being exposedto the video game; there was a positive change in the students’ scores from 7.2 ± 0.5 to 9.0 ± 0.5.Our findings suggest that virtual laboratory FAS can be effective in achieving course learninggoals, such as students being able to understand the principles behind analytical techniques, being able to use (in

in the First Two Years of Engineering EducationAbstract   There is a world-wide demand for smaller and faster electronic devices. As a result, thereis an increasing need for a global workforce familiar with the basics of micro- and nanoscalefabrication and characterization. This workforce will come primarily from post secondaryinstitutions. For this reason, it is important for nanotechnology instructors at non-research basedpost secondary institutions to provide laboratory exercises that introduce students to thefundamental concepts associated with fabrication and characterization on the micro- andnanoscale. Additionally, these laboratory exercises need to encourage student understanding andappreciation of differences that

is to provide a simple methodto build and utilize such an instrument in educational laboratories. Commercially availablespectrum analyzers are very expensive and not feasible for underdeveloped courtiers with limitedresources to obtain such expensive instruments.I. IntroductionThe Spectrum analyzers are real-time analyzers, which mean that they simultaneously displaythe amplitude of all signals in the frequency range of the analyzer. They provide informationabout the voltage or energy of a signal as a function of frequency1. Spectrum analyzers play major roles in design of many applications in electrical signal analysis, mechanical measurements, and communications. These instruments are especially used in lowfrequency applications such as

undergraduate colleges in theUS. While faculty at UTG (and smaller colleges in the US) will struggle to compete with theR1's in the scholarship of discovery, the playing field can be leveled or even tipped to theiradvantage in the other areas. Faculty at many smaller US colleges and UTG will likely alwayshave greater teaching responsibilities and less access to costly research laboratories andresources (library, software, database access, support staff, technicians, etc.). This clearly tips thecompetitive balance toward the R1's in the scholarship of discovery. However in the scholarshipof teaching, an increased valuation of teaching should provide opportunity to raise visibility inthis area of scholarship. Evidence of this can be seen every summer at

A description of any specialized laboratories, equipment or any other significant new resources that will be necessary to offer the program.Currently the Dublin Institute of Technology is facing some of the same issues that catalyzed theUMBC effort. Brian Reed was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award at DIT and will be part ofthe effort to address the issues that are facing DIT bringing a perspective that was developed atUMBC. The differences and similarities of the problems and solutions facing the twoinstitutions will be discussed.1

Students returnedfrom the trip with a heightened interest in the historical, sociological and anthropological detailssurrounding the project. Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty have organized to offer a for-credit summerdesign studio with the title “Engineering for Development Workers.” The course will beinstructed within the context of a development scenario in an Andean village in Peru. While theengineering content is coordinated to parallel Structural Materials Laboratory and GeotechnicalEngineering Laboratory, additional lecture material is scheduled for the general development

well.New design for student lab activities seems to enhance student engagement, motivate theirlearning, and provide them with a new array of opportunities to obtain and sustain theirknowledge gained from their college education. It confirms possibility of developing andimplementing advanced curriculum for a lab in addition to course itself. The lesson learned fromthe experiment has laid out a solid foundation for future improvements and experiments with alarger student sample size.. Page 25.275.8Bibliography 1. among American curricula but hope that the generalstructure of the curricula selected is sufficiently representative to facilitate comparisons anduseful observations. Several observations are quickly apparent: 1) Regardless of degree, the number of instruction contact hours for a degree program in Russia is considerably higher than comparable degrees in the American system. American bachelor degrees are in the 120-130 credit hours range compared to ~220 contact hours in the Russian system. The authors realize that contact hours are different than credit hours. The hours included in Figure 1 are also a mixture of lecture and laboratory for both Russian and American systems. It has been assumed that the

are interested as many of them offermarket-oriented courses that almost guarantee them a job upon graduation. They save on salariesof the faculty by employing teaching staff on a part-time basis or by relying on teachers fromalready established public universities. The private universities are very often linked withuniversities abroad. This connection helps the students to move to USA, Canada, UK, Australia,Germany, Japan etc. for higher studies. Even though all the private universities startedfunctioning in hired premises for classrooms, laboratories and offices, they started buildingcampuses using the interest from the certificates of deposits (CD) of the profits3

We will begin theprogram in the capital city of San Jose where we will meet with researchers and students at theUniversity of Costa Rica National Laboratory for Materials and Infrastructure (Lanamme) and atthe Institute for Sustainable Development. We will proceed to travel to six different locationsover 23 days, returning back to San Jose to conclude the study abroad and return to the U.S. Ateach location we have day trips planned to infrastructure sites including new highways
