and transparency for the systems of higher educationand its qualifications. They are important clarification tools for the students, citizens, employersand the educators themselves [4].For the university it is a very useful tool for planning and organizing learning since it makesevident the expected results of the teachings and allows them to be easily understood byprofessors, students, employers and other stakeholders of the educational system. On the onehand it helps the professor to guide his teaching towards the achievement of certain objectivesthat have been made explicit in terms of knowledge and skills. On the other, allows the student toknow in advance the challenges that he or she will face throughout his/her training, that is

In addition to addressing the UN SDGs, these engagementactivities seek to create and sustain and international collaboration in a platform known as thefourth age of research [2]. Following these initiatives at Penn State and recognizing the need toprepare our students to make a meaningful contribution to the implementation of the SDGs, wedeveloped a six-week long faculty-led program called: Global Engineering Culture and Society. This paper describes the overall vision of the program, and focus on the design, development, implementation, challenges, assessment plans, and what is next for the course: GlobalEngineering Culture and

offering of the course, thestudent population was expanded greatly to include almost 200 MS and PhD students from manyof the Schools at SJTU. In this 2018 offering a large faculty team was established to providetutorials to groups of roughly 12 students to supplement the lecture component delivered by theU.S. professor. Student and faculty reviews of the course have been mostly positive and manyimportant lessons have been learnt through the experience. The most critical of these lessons arebeing incorporated into a revised plan for the course when it is offered next in 2019. It is feltthat our experience should be of interest to others contemplating the challenges of preparing non-native English speakers for the engineering profession in this

developed in the job, many of them can be promoted during school. Some of these competencies are: teamwork, client/stakeholder focus, creative thinking, planning and organizing, problem solving, decision making, seeking opportunities, working with tools and technology, scheduling and coordinating, business acumen. 4. Tier 4 – Industry-wide technical competencies: these competencies include things that highly relate to the professional practice. Similarly, to tier 3, these competencies will be developed in the workplace, however, engineering schools play a role in preparing the students for them. Some examples are professional ethics, design, operations, engineering economics, legal, sustainability and

students.IntroductionGlobalization requires future engineers to live up to the challenges from industryupgrading and development [1],[2]. China, as the largest producer of engineeringgraduates in the world, has been encountering many challenges in the field ofengineering education and undergoing a series of engineering education reforms. Oneof the major problems lies in the oversupply of unqualified engineers and theundersupply of high-quality engineers [2]. Considering the challenges facing Chineseengineering education, the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) initiated the “Planfor Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers” (PETOE) in 2010 [3] and the“Emerging Engineering Education” (EEE) plan in 2017 [4]. Both programs target toproduce a large number of high-quality

establishment of a council for promoting the education of SET is essential for the country, since engineers and scientists have a collective responsibility to improve the lives of people around the world including Afghanistan. Many expatriate Afghanis may be willing to help towards this goal.  There is a strong need for better planning in order to create a higher education system that can address the present problems of the country and it is sustainable in the long- term using the local resources rather than being dependent on international aid.  There is certainly a lack of professionals at the MoHE and Universities to prioritize and manage the multi-million dollars USAID and other funded projects in

That situation greatly changedafter DTU students visited Purdue University and for the first time the students met face-to face. After the first 1.5-2 hour meeting many questions were answered and more detailed planning ofthe project was started. During that meeting at the SATT and the presentation of the large enginetest cell, the DTU students were able to understand Purdue students’ expectation for the project.Next, the very important step was to explain to the Purdue students what kind of competenciesDTU students have and the possibilities they have to solve their problems. The whole project isvery complex and can be divided into several

engineering students should possess to successfully enter the labormarket. In the systematic review of Passow and Passow [4], planning and time management,problem-solving, communication and teamwork were identified as highly important byengineers. Identified as less, but still important, were ethics, lifelong learning, taking initiative, thinking creatively, and focusing on goals. Does this mean that engineering students needmore teamwork skills than lifelong learning skills? Or do students need to finish theireducational program with an advanced level mastery of lifelong learning and an expert levelmastery of teamwork? These questions raise the need to not just investigate the importanceof the competencies but also of the competency levels required

projects while American students went to Denmark at the end of the projectsin order to present the results of their work for the companies involved. The first face-to-face visitis absolutely crucial for the development of common goals in the project, as well as in order toestablish the proper communication during the entire project work. The visit is always planned incooperation with the American team as they are the host and provide both housing and activities forthe stay of Danish students. Danish students stay with a couple of the American students and theirmates and spend a lot of time socializing with them. By spending all this time together both parts ofthe team, Americans and Danish, are able to get a better idea of culture, language and

made.IntroductionSustainability is, as stated in the United Nations Report on the World Commission onEnvironment and Development [1], the consideration of impacts to and preservation of theeconomy, the environment, and social equity (often referred to as “the three ‘E’s” ofsustainability) in the execution of any plan or project. Its growth as a field of study and as astandard of practice is understandable in light of concerns about dwindling resources, populationand developmental growth, and environmental sensitivity based on global warming and othernatural phenomena. Engineering in general, and civil and construction engineering in particular,is a field uniquely well-equipped to tackle the issues of incorporating sustainability into projectexecution. Indeed, the study
