authors developed an exploratory pilot interview focusing on students’identification and recognition of the application of course concepts into their senior designprojects. The pilot interview was qualitative, semi-structured, and open-ended in nature.2,3 Theinterview protocol is listed in table 4.In order to explore students’ ability to recognize and identify mechatronics, instrumentation, andexperimental design concepts without biasing their answers at the initiation of the interview, theprotocol followed a specified format. project demonstrates an economical (approximate cost:$1000) hydrogen injection system that could be built from readily available, off-the-shelfcomponents for a gasoline engine equipped with an on-board (ECU) computer designedto control combustion. Assignments consist of images paired with written technical reports, and self-reflection sessions to learn "effective communication" skills.
